Happy Match Day!

Match Day celebration at Northwestern-Feinberg

Match Day moved to Friday this year, so the results are still trickling in from the medical schools. Illinois Family Medicine Residency Programs had a tremendous year, filling 95 percent via the AOA and NRMP Match process, and the rest filled quickly via the SOAP process.  Nationally family medicine filled 3,000 out of 3,109 available slots with a fill rate of 96 percent.  US Medical school graduates made up just over 46 percent of family medicine residents.  View the AAFP Match analysis here.

IAFP will be collecting data from the medical schools and will provide more details in the next e-News and the May issue of Illinois Family Physician.

The truth about e-cigarettes

IAFP Past President and current AAFP Vice Speaker Javette Orgain, MD, MPH blogs on the growing evidence that e-cigarettes are truly a public health problem.  They are unregulated and are not a safe alternative to smoking nor are they an effective cessation tool. Orgain helped lead the fight for e-cigarette laws in Chicago. Read her blog post here.

AAFP Urges Congress to pass SGR Repeal

The AAFP sent a letter to House and Senate leaders saying the Academy supports bipartisan legislation to repeal the Medicare sustainable growth rate formula and establish a payment model linked to quality improvements instead of volume. The AAFP urged Congress to pass the bill before March 31, when the current SGR patch expires, and said it would allow family physicians to do long-term planning and make changes related to adopting a patient-centered medical home model. IAFP has signed on to a joint letter that will be sent to individual members of Congress next week. Read more in this week's AAFP News Now.

Current Illinois FP of the Year runs for Boston Marathon victims

The 2013 IAFP Family Physician of the Year, Dr. Joseph Welty of Dixon, is returning to Boston for the marathon on April 21.  He had just finished the race last year minutes before two bombs exploded at the finish line, killing three spectators and injuring over 200.  Welty will run the Boston Marathon again this year and is running in honor of bombing victim Jarrod Clowery and fundraising for the One Fund supporting victims and families.  You can donate to this effort using this link.

Jarrod Clowery was right next to the second explosion, and was severely injured. Dozens of pieces of shrapnel have been removed from his body, including nails, ball bearings and bee-bees. Jarrod suffered third degree burns to his back and flash burns on his face, arms and legs too. His friends J.P., Paul and Mark all lost one of their legs in the blast.

In light of recent news about celebrities choosing not to vaccinate their children, WTVO-TV in Rockford talked to IAFP member Diane Zug, MD about vaccination issues and how to talk to parents about protecting their children.

Rachel Winters, MD of Lawrenceville is featured in the IL-HITREC newsletter for her transition to Meaningful Use of electronic health records as an example of a small practice success story in engaging with the Illinois Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center.

Past president Lee Sacks, MD, CMO of Advocate Health Care and CEO of Advocate Physician Partners was featured in Modern Healthcare magazine about Advocate's clinical integration program and many hot topics in health care, including Medicare audits, funding and the ACA.

In Memoriam:  Greg Bulava, MD of Niles passed away last week at age 60. He practiced for 32 years and was well known for teaching and also serving in the emergency room.
