Happy Match Day!

Match Day moved to Friday this year, so the results are still trickling in from the medical schools and residency programs. Illinois Family Medicine Residency Programs appear to have experienced a tremendous year, filling via the AOA and NRMP Match process.  Few programs participated in the SOAP process and most were filled by the AOA and NRMP matches.

Nationally family medicine filled 3,000 out of 3,109 available slots with a fill rate of 96 percent.  US Medical school graduates made up just over 46 percent of family medicine residents.  View the AAFP Match analysis here.

IAFP will be collecting data from the medical schools and residencies and will provide more details in the next e-News and the May issue of Illinois Family Physician.

Nominate a deserving FP of the Year-Nominations are due June 1 and must have a support letter included.  Link to the form here with more details.

Current Illinois FP of the Year runs for Boston Marathon victims

The 2013 IAFP Family Physician of the Year, Dr. Joseph Welty of Dixon, is returning to Boston for the marathon on April 21.  He had just finished the race last year minutes before two bombs exploded at the finish line, killing three spectators and injuring over 200.  Welty will run the Boston Marathon again this year and is running in honor of bombing victim Jarrod Clowery and fundraising for the One Fund supporting victims and families.  You can donate to this effort using this link.

Jarrod Clowery was right next to the second explosion, and was severely injured. Dozens of pieces of shrapnel have been removed from his body, including nails, ball bearings and BB pellets. Jarrod suffered third degree burns to his back and flash burns on his face, arms and legs too. His friends J.P., Paul and Mark each lost one of their legs in the blast.

Federal Update

Time to Tell Congress to pass bipartisan SGR repeal bill
The AAFP sent a letter to all members of Congress, which was co-signed by the Illinois chapter, reiterating the Academy's support for bipartisan legislation to repeal the Medicare sustainable growth rate formula and establish a payment model linked to quality improvements instead of volume. The AAFP urged Congress to pass the bill before March 31, when the current SGR patch expires, and said it would allow family physicians to do long-term planning and make changes related to adopting a patient-centered medical home model.  Now is your time to contact your members of Congress directly.  AAFP has an easy to use Speak Out email ready for your action.

News You Can Use

Medicaid Reimbursement Survey

After hearing from providers in Illinois about issues regarding coverage and reimbursement for contraception, the University of Chicago is looking to improve equitable access. IAFP members have reported a number of barriers that can impede access to the full range of contraceptive methods, even with health reform.

Specifically, they would like to explore the issue of Medicaid reimbursement for LARC (Long-Acting Reversible Contraception). Several clinics have reported struggling to stock IUDs and contraceptive implants following a reimbursement policy change in June of 2012. In order to better assess the issues facing providers we have developed a brief online survey to help gather data and identify any areas where improvement may be recommended. Please complete the survey by April 4. Data will be used to make broad recommendations and will not be published. Please reach out to Lee Hasselbacher with questions.
