Smoking Cessation Clip Art CVS quits the cigs

National pharmacy and drug store retailer CVS announced on Tuesday that they will stop carrying cigarettes and other tobacco products in all stores by October.  The announcement drew cheers from advocates across the nation, as well as some skepticism from those who tied the announcement to a larger plan of retail healthcare clinic expansion. Nevertheless, IAFP and many other organizations praised them via Facebook and Twitter.

Federal Update

Deal Emerges on Capitol Hill to ditch the SGR

(Hat Tip to Texas AFP) Federal Lawmakers Thursday morning unveiled a bipartisan, bicameral agreement to replace the Medicare physician payment formula that includes a 0.5 percent payment hike for five years. The payment increase had been a sticking point until the GOP Doctors Caucus agreed late Wednesday to the five-year increase after havingearlier pushedfor a 10-year payment hike. The deal to replace the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate payment formula also aims to improve the existing fee-for-service system by consolidating the three existing quality programs into a streamlined one that rewards providers who meet performance thresholds, improves care for seniors, and provides certainty for providers.

AAFP has voiced support for the deal, releasing a statement from President Reid Blackwelder, MD, "For more than a decade, the SGR has threatened our most vulnerable patients' access to care by requiring drastic cuts in payment for medical services. By ending the annual, bi-annual, monthly, sometimes even bi-monthly cycle of last-minute "fixes" to prevent mandated SGR cuts, Congress will stabilize Medicare and bring peace of mind to

their elderly and disabled constituents."

Health plans sold on the health insurance marketplace must include a 90-day grace period for premium payment from those who qualify for a tax subsidy. AAFP plans an upcoming blog on this subject that may spark additional dialogue from members.

IAFP board member Carrie Holland, MD is quoted in this month's Chicago Health Magazine in an article about a recent study that claimed multivitamins have no benefits.  She encouraged patients to work with their family physician to ensure nutritional needs are met.

Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency Program is featured in the January 30th Hinsdale Doings for their Holiday Helpers program which brought joy in the form of Christmas gift help to families in need.  Dr. Andrew Dunn had the honor of playing Santa. Meanwhile, Program Director Clara Carls, DO provides insight in the January 28 Clarendon Hills local edition of the Sun-Times in an article outlining the hardships caused by the brutal below-zero temperatures forcing school districts to shut down on back-to-back days twice in January. Carls reminds readers that extreme cold can cause frostbite or frostnip and can be very dangerous for children who are outside for an unexpected length or time or for anyone with underlying medical issues.

Kate Rowland MD authored an editorial in the Jan/Feb Annals of Family Medicine explaining the voice of the new generation of family physicians, which she called Generation IV and differentiated them from Generations I-III as established by the Keystone III conference in 2000. Oh how things have changed!
