FM Midwest Shines in Second Year - in Milwaukee

IAFP is the meeting management organization for the Family Medicine Midwest Foundation, leading the #FMRevolution in our region.  The 2nd Annual FM Midwest conference united the best in family medicine with top quality students in Milwaukee Oct. 4-6.  The conference drew well over 300 attendees, along with more than 50 residency programs under 41 organizations from nine Midwestern states at the Residency Fair.  Then add in three inspiring plenary speakers, 61 sessions and presentations and 36 poster presentations all wrapped up in a day and a half.   Another highlight:  Family Medicine Midwest Foundation Board Chair Janice Benson, MD shared the news that FM Midwest had been awarded the AAFP Foundation Program of Excellence award the previous week!  Congratulations to the many dedicated committee volunteers and thank you to the Midwest organizations that support FM Midwest year round.

Special thanks to UIC students Aaron Goldstein and Mustafa Alavi for their hard work on the host committee and to NorthShore resident Monica Fudala, MD for her work.  Applause to the 14 Illinois residency programs who exhibited at the fair and provided so much content, attendees and enthusiasm!

ACPE Accepting Applications for 2014 Leape Ahead Award

Improving health care in the United States means teaching young physicians the interpersonal, collaborative and  team-oriented skills they need to become leaders. To show its support, the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) each year honors health care organizations making extraordinary strides in promoting a culture of leadership, professionalism, communication and teamwork among medical students and residents. ACPE is currently accepting applications for its third annual Leape Ahead Award, named for Dr. Lucian Leape, the founder of the patient safety movement in America. Previous winners include:

Illinois Marketplace and Medicaid Expansion is live

Starting October 1, those eligible for Medicaid expansion are able to enroll for services to begin coverage on January 1, 2014.  High-volume has caused some lags in website and call center response (okay, that's a bit of an understatement!).  Meanwhile, even the certified navigators and assistors are encountering the same problems in their efforts to help patients in person.  Remember, your patients have until December 15 to enroll and ensure coverage on January 1, 2014 -  www.getcoveredillinois.gov is the website, although call center staff are encouraging patients to enroll by mail in the meantime.  Reports from the field indicate that it may take six weeks for the application to be processed to determine eligibility for and the amount of any premium assistance subsidies.   Patience and persistence will be required.

AAFP addresses a long list of issues with HHS

It's not exactly a letter to Santa, but AAFP asked the federal government to bring solutions and relief to many issues critical to family medicine in responding to a call for comments to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on the next phase of HHS retrospective review of their regulations.  The list of burdensome and counterproductive regulations is long and AAFP  Board Chair Jeff Cain, MD covered them all, with references to AAFP's many previous letters covering these same issues that continue to complicate and obstruct the family physician's practice and ability to provide the best care for patients.  Some of the worst problems include the looming transition to ICD-10, the unnecessary prior authorization processes, and the many hoops Medicare and private insurers place between providers, patients and the care they need.  Link to Dr. Cain's letter with AAFP comments and you can also get more information in this week's AAFP News Now story.

Lianne Holloway, MD of Seneca was featured in the Oct. 8 Joliet Herald News about her advocacy for the Million Step challenge, which requires a commitment to 10,000 steps per day.  Holloway originally kicked off her challenge on October 1 to prepare for the extra food and fun of the holiday season.  She invites anyone interested to join her Facebook Page and join the conversation.

Taylor, Moore, DO of Quincy was quoted in an Oct. 14 Quincy Herald Whig article looking at the expansion of e-cigarettes into the U.S. Market.  Moore laments that the e-cigarette manufacturers use fruit and candy flavored cartridges that can be attractive to a younger crowd. Fortunately, local retailers say that e-cigarettes have not been a big seller and local health advocates report that the devices have not caught on with area teens as much as nationwide statistics from the CDC have reported.
