Erie Family Health Welcomes Gov. Quinn and Sec. Sebelius
Former IAFP board member Deb Edberg, MD who is also program director at the Northwestern-McGaw Family Medicine Residency Program joined Erie Family Health Center in welcoming U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Gov. Pat Quinn for a special announcement of the approval of the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace. This state-federal partnership will enable Illinois legal residents and small businesses to evaluate and purchase health insurance as part of the Affordable Care Act. Enrollment opens Oct. 1 and coverage begins Jan. 1, 2014. IAFP resident and Public Relations Task Force member Tina Wheat, MD also participated in a guided tour for the governor and the secretary to showcase the residency program's federally funded teaching health center. Hinsdale FMR Achieves PCMH Level III Recognition
The Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program has been awarded Level III status by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). This designation recognizes the highest standards in patient care by demonstrating the principles of the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). Programs and medical centers must demonstrate quality care on six standards: Enhanced Access and Continuity, Identification and Management of Patient Populations, Planning and Management of Care, Self-Care Support and Community Resources, Tracking and Coordinating Care, and Measurement and Improvement of Performance.
This is the first Illinois Family Medicine Residency Program to achieve this Level III status. Their score was near-perfect at 99/100 points achieved. The program's family medicine center, The Hinsdale Family Medicine Center (HFMC) is located on the campus of Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. Seven family medicine faculty - Clara Carls DO, Leslie Sleuwen MD, Zewdu Haile MD (Medical Director), Kate Gunnell MD, Rachel Klamo DO, Elizabeth Bockhold MD, and Tony Atkin LCSW provide comprehensive care to patients from DuPage, Cook, and Will counties.
IAFP members present at UIC leadership forum
IAFP board member Renee M. Poole, MD of Chicago presented to UIC students in the Urban Medicine Program as part of a two-week Advocacy and Policy Summit on Monday Feb. 18. Poole presented on the effect of the Affordable Care Act on physicians and their patients, with an emphasis on primary care. Other IAFP members on the forum agenda included Thomas Huggett, MD; Tina Wheat, MD; Susan Buchanan, MD; Steven Rothchild, MD and Andrew Dykens, MD. Residencies and FMIGs are welcome to use Dr. Poole's slides for their own presentations about the Affordable Care Act. Email Ginnie Flynn at gflynn@iafp.com to request the Power Point.
Glen Aduana, MD visits Jackson Park Hospital FMR
Another board member, Glen Aduana, MD of Chicago visited the Jackson Park Hospital Family Medicine Residency program on Tuesday Feb. 19 to engage residents on IAFP and AAFP opportunities and membership benefits, as well as overview of the ACA and how it will impact their futures as family physicians.

Would you like to represent the family medicine residents of Illinois and be the voice of the future of family medicine? Apply for a leadership role in the IAFP! The job description and application for the president-elect position for resident and student:
Serve as the Illinois delegate to the AAFP's National Congress of Resident/Student Members August 1-3 in Kansas City. The selected resident/student will represent Illinois', attend the business sessions and cast Illinois' votes at the Congress and in elections. A written report will be required to IAFP upon your return.
*NOTE: Funding from IAFP is not available for travel expenses to National Conference. Travel would be at the expense of the resident or student delegate or his/her program. Apply for an AAFP scholarship by May 1 to offset the travel costs! Link to scholarship application information on the AAFP web site. Please note, different scholarships have different requirements - including some that require an essay from YOU! Start early and get your application in!
Other duties:
-Serve on the planning committee for the 2013 and 2014 Family Medicine Midwest Conference
-Serve on the IAFP committee of your choice
-Fill in for the student or resident IAFP board member if he or she is not able to attend the IAFP's board meeting (all travel is reimbursed for board meetings).
-The president-elect becomes the resident or student president in June 2014 and represents the respective constituency on the IAFP board of directors.

Wednesday, June 5 - all day long
Illinois resident members are invited to submit their research projects to compete in a statewide, online Resident Research Forum - no travel required!
NEW THIS YEAR: Research may be completed or in-progress. We will have separate categories for each.
Presentations are limited to a maximum 15 minutes (can be shorter). View some great presentations from the 2012 IAFP Resident Research Webinar on the IAFP web site at www.iafp.com/residents to give you an idea what to expect.
- By Monday, May 6 - Residents register with their name and presentation title.
- Register online here and indicate time blocks you would be available to present
- Presentation blocks will be offered all day between 8:30am and 6pm, with a total of 23 presentations available.
Residents who are not competing in the webinar may also volunteer to serve as a reviewer. We also need faculty members from any and all Illinois family medicine residency programs to volunteer for a shift as a reviewer. Several IAFP leaders and educators met with newly elected Congressman Rodney Davis (IL 13th-R) at the SIU Springfield Center for Family Medicine, which is a combined FQHC and family medicine residency training program.

Narrative Medicine Workshop March 8-9 at Erie Family Health Center in Chicago
In order to promote wellness and compassionate patient care, Northwestern's Family Medicine Residency program was awarded a grant from AAFP to support our humanities and science initiatives. They have invited Dr. Craig Irvine who leads the Narrative Medicine program at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, to train residents and faculty in Narrative Medicine.
During this two-day workshop, residents and faculty will learn effective techniques for attentive listening, adopting others' perspectives, accurate representation, and reflective reasoning. Lectures will focus on re-conceptualizing empathy, narrative ethics, bearing witness, and illness-healing stories. Small group seminars will offer firsthand experience in close reading, reflective writing, and autobiographical exercises.

Beth Dowell, MD of Oak Park authored a letter to the editor in the Jan. 25 Chicago Tribune defending the role of the physician in asking patients about guns in the home and related safety issues.
IAFP 2011 Teacher of the Year Christopher Guerrero, MD was honored by Philippines president Benigno S. Aquino with a Presidential Award for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas at the presidential palace in Manilla. Guerrero has been leading medical missions to the Philippines for the past 20 years. A story appeared in the Jan. 28 Elmwood Park Elm Leaves.
Lianne Holloway, MD was featured in the Feb. 5 Joliet Herald-News for her tradition of Meatless Mondays as a simple way to reduce fat and calories intake. Meatless Mondays originally began as a grassroots movement at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Janet Albers, MD was featured on WCIA-TV in Springfield yesterday about the SIU Center for Family Medicine's federal grant and their mission of being the medical home for everyone. Check out the video here.
The influenza epidemic has dominated the news, and the offices and hospitals of our members!
Katherine Kirley, MD was quoted in an article that ran in several newspapers throughout Lake County, and Mark Loafman, MD of Chicago is quoted in the bilingual publication Lawndale News. Also, former IAFP student board member Aaron Traeger, MD (now a pediatrician) was interviewed by Bloomington television station WMBD.
AAFP New Physician Board Member Ravi Grivois-Shah, MD of Oak Park offers the AAFP Leader Voices blog (scroll down to Jan. 15) urging all health care providers to get the flu vaccine.
Elizabeth Pector, MD of Naperville provides insight into a Jan. 14 Naperville Sun article about a young patient who was diagnosed with shingles and how that can happen.
2011 IAFP President's Award honoree Matthew Hunsaker, MD is featured in the January issue of the University of Illinois Health System's magazine for their "No Harm on the Farm" training program through the University of Illinois at Rockford Rural Medicine Education (RMED) program.
In Memoriam: Life member Kazys Narscius, MD passed away on Jan. 29th in Alton at the age of 88.

Submit your poster presentation to AAFP National Conference
The AAFP is now accepting applications for poster presentations at the 2013 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students scheduled for August 1 - 3 in Kansas City. The poster categories are:
- clinical inquiry
- community project
- educational program
- research
The contest is open to AAFP resident and student members enrolled in an ACGME/AOA accredited residency program or LCME/COCA accredited medical schools. The submission deadline is April 12. elected and appointed positions and includes a leadership grid that outlines information about each position, including length of term and travel requirements. If you are planning to attend the AAFP National Conference Aug 1-3 or have interests in national leadership involvement start thinking about it now.
Some appointed positions require that interested students and residents to complete and return the application materials to the chapter - for Illinois that's Ginnie Flynn at gflynn@iafp.com.
However, if you plan to run for an elected position, your materials (i.e., application, CV, and letters) are due to AAFP by July 12, 2013.
