Narrative Medicine Workshop March 8-9 at Erie Family Health Center in Chicago
The intersection of humanities and science make medicine enriching and meaningful work. For many physicians, the most rewarding aspects of medicine are hearing their patients' compelling life stories, reflecting on the miracles and mysteries of medicine, and experiencing the art of healing through medicine and words. Despite these fulfilling areas of medicine, many physicians lose contact with the art of medicine and experience burnout due to the rigorous demands of clinical practice. In order to promote wellness and compassionate patient care, Northwestern's Family Medicine Residency program was awarded a grant from AAFP to support our humanities and science initiatives. We have invited Dr. Craig Irvine who leads the Narrative Medicine program at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, to train residents and faculty in Narrative Medicine.
During this two day workshop, residents and faculty will learn effective techniques for attentive listening, adopting others' perspectives, accurate representation, and reflective reasoning. Lectures will focus on re-conceptualizing empathy, narrative ethics, bearing witness, and illness-healing stories. Small group seminars will offer firsthand experience in close reading, reflective writing, and autobiographical exercises.

Tip over alert - patient education for your practice
There may be hidden dangers to small children in every house that you might not realize. Specifically, children can be hurt or killed from injuries caused by heavy furniture and television tip-overs. IAFP is a member of the Safe Homes Coalition with the Illinois Attorney General and several consumer, retail and children's organizations. Together we've created this public education poster that you can download and print (11x17") for your waiting room and/or exam rooms.

CDC and SAMSHA release news on smoking and mental illness
Adults with some form of mental illness have a smoking rate 70 percent higher than adults with no mental illness, according to a Vital Signs report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The report finds that 36 percent of adults with a mental illness are cigarette smokers, compared with only 21 percent of adults who do not have a mental illness.
According to the report, nearly 1 in 5 adults in the United States - about 45.7 million Americans-have some type of mental illness. Among adults with mental illness, smoking prevalence is especially high among younger adults, American Indians and Alaska Natives, those living below the poverty line, and those with lower levels of education.
