Member helps kids Fuel Up to Play 60

IAFP is a platinum supporter of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, which is a partnership between the National Dairy Council and the National Football League (NFL).  Fuel up to play 60 is at work in hundreds of schools across the state. The top ten performing schools were invited to a special workout at the Bears' Halas Hall training facility, and IAFP member Michelle Meeks, MD of Hazel Crest was part of the program.  Check her out in the highlight video (click on the Illinois All Star Celebration in the upper right of the page).

Chapter Visit

The Illinois Chapter welcomed Colorado AFP chapter executive Raquel Rosen, CAE to our office this week to share best practices about our operations, staffing and programs.

REPEAT ITEM: Looking for 2 Illinois NCSC Delegates

AAFP's National Conference of Special Constituencies (NCSC) is a valuable opportunity for professional development and networking with colleagues from across the country (click here for the meeting brochure).  The NCSC considers and adopts resolutions that are eventually considered by the full AAFP Congress of Delegates.   This year Illinois AFP will be sending five members to fill the NCSC delegation, and Dr. Javette Orgain, AAFP Vice Speaker, and Dr. Ravi Grivois-Shah, AAFP New Physician board member will be there. Now is your chance to be there, too!

The slots still available for our NCSC delegation are Minority Physician and International Medical Graduate (IMG). The conference is April 25-27 with optional preconference workshops on April 24, 2013. Illinois AFP NCSC delegates will attend the conference with expenses reimbursed.  If you meet the eligibility of any of the above two constituencies and would like to apply for the delegate slot, please contact Jennifer O'Leary at joleary@iafp.com or 630-427-8001 by February 28th.

State Government Relations

IDFPR cuts leave physicians in limbo

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) announced a significant reduction in personnel effective January 15th  which will delay all physician licensing requests 12-18 months, impacting 3,500 new resident physician trainees expected to start in July 2013 and another estimated 2,500 physicians moving to Illinois this year.  IAFP recognizes that physicians' licensing fees have remained the same since 1987 and the Department's required costs have approximately doubled. The Medical Fund, however, was swept of almost $9 million of its dedicated resources meant to cover current IDFPR operations in a process employed by many General Assemblies. This current action is untenable for our family medicine residencies and for recruiting family physicians to Illinois, and will directly impact patient care.  Illinois AFP is working with other specialty societies to address the issue with the Illinois State Medical Society and the Department.

IAFP needs to share stories about the direct impact these delays will have on family physicians and patients.  Please contact Ginnie Flynn, gflynn@iafp.com with your story as soon as possible.

New Medicaid cards

The Department of Healthcare and Family Services is transitioning from issuing monthly medical cards to annual paper medical cards. During the next month all currently eligible Medical Program participants will begin to receive in the mail a new paper medical card along with an instructional brochure. HFS medical cards will then be issued following a person's annual re-determination. Providers will be required to verify eligibility for each date of service. You can use this one page flyer as a tool to inform staff of the upcoming changes.

Also the Illinois Medicaid Integrated Care Program will enter Phase II on February 1, 2013. Here's a list of answers to Frequently Asked Questions on the Integrated Care Program (pdf).
