July 2015

July kicked off with a BOOM at the neighborhood 4th of July party! Thanks to all of our amazing volunteers and residents for making it a huge success. For those of you that are newer to the neighborhood, we hope you had fun and avoided the fire truck hose. This month's newsletter is full of other activities to join if you missed that one.  Please also join me in thanking Nancy Seavall, Kristen Dimig and a host of other volunteers for another spectacular Gator swim season!

I've spent a lot of time discussing the board's focus on continuing to enhance our neighborhood and its property values. This month is one of the best opportunities we've had to rally homeowners to achieve that goal in a long time. On July 15th, South Suburban is holding a citizens input meeting to aid their architects in the proposed redesign of the clubhouse for our own South Suburban Golf Course. As most of you know, this is a great course with an old dinosaur for a clubhouse. Let's all show our support by giving input and emphasizing the importance of this renovation to Heritage Greens! For more information, please click HERE.

Recently, we've sent out a few email blasts related to safety concerns. I've had an influx of emails about speeding, coyotes, petty theft, door-to-door solicitors, and even garage sale incidents.  We discussed speeding in our July 8th board meeting and will share the findings and next steps soon.  Neighbors have been terrific at not taking a passive approach and either contacting authorities, confronting suspicious individuals and speeders, or letting our communications team (HGNewsWeb@gmail.com) know to alert others. "If it looks and smells like a pig............" trust your gut and take prudent action. Crooks don't like vigilant neighborhoods.

Proud to be serving all of you!

What a great way to communicate, to promote a business.  Especially with all the construction/remodeling going on in Heritage Greens.

Just one issue, they are not approved in Heritage Greens. Per our Rules and RegulationsNO SIGNS. If your contractor, painter or security company wants to advertise in HG, they can.  Encourage them to take out an ad in the monthly HG Newsletter. That way they can reach the other 577 homes in Heritage Greens and actually support us. REPurposing:
It's a great time of year to use those unwanted items: plastic milk jugs, papers, etc.  Get the kids busy making new items. This summer when you are planting think outside of the box, or in this case the pot. You can repurpose a number of common household items to create whimsical one of a kind planters.
Herb garden using old yogurt containers. This is probably the easiest project ever, because involves a simple plastic food container which is thrown away as soon as is empty. To make it look special, spray paint it or apply models on it and let it dry, then simply plant your herbs. When I was a kid, my mom and I made lots of planters like this one.

Book Planters For Succulents
Have an old book you just can't part with. These homemade book planters look wonderful. Find some old books and cut a hole in which you will later fit a plastic sheet to prevent any water and dirt to deteriorate the rest of the book. After that, take out the plants from their original planter and place them into the book. Trim the extra plastic and clean the newly created planter.  This is the perfect artistic extension: taking something beautiful and turning it into something else beautiful. You can find step by step instructions HERE.

Recycled upside down planters
Planters can be a very cool and cheap idea to decorate your house, but upside down can planters? It's hard to imagine plants growing upside down but we found it is possible and looks fun as well. To do a project on your own, the perfect candidate would be a coffee can with a plastic lid. For step by step instructions, click HERE

Heritage Greens Gators

Record Breakers:  Matthew Greene, Michael Greene & Walker Kurtz.  Congratulations!

The Gator Swim Team season has been a huge success this summer. We are in the last week of the season and we would like to thank all of our Heritage Greens Neighbors for supporting us the past eight weeks. We know we can be loud during our weekday practices, social events and home meets, but please know we are having the time of our lives. The entire swim team family appreciates your support, generosity and enthusiasm. The Heritage Greens Community is a big part of our team and we cannot thank you enough.

The qualifying swimmers from this week's prelims will go on to Stonegate on Saturday July 11 for the RMSL Championship Finals. We will be back at the pool that evening for the Gator Awards Banquet to wrap up the season.

We place a very high priority on the Mission and Vision of this swim team.

  • Mission: To support our Heritage Greens community by promoting a positive, fun, and rewarding experience for all Heritage Greens children, parents and neighbors.
  • Vision: All Gator swimmers will be given an opportunity to develop and build swimming skills, confidence, sportsmanship, friendships, goals, discipline and commitment to the team.

We were able to reach the goals of our Mission and Vision this summer through all of the hard work, dedication and commitment from our Committee Heads. We could not run this team without them.

  • Announcer - Nick Lepetsos -The voice of our Saturday morning home swim meets.
  • National Anthem - Michael Galvin - He sang it loud and proud at our home meets.
  • Concessions - Kelly Aikens & Mary Herman - They kept our bellies full with yummy food. Every home meet they diligently planned the menu, shopping list, prices and set up.
  • Equipment - Kerry Carothers - He provided shelter for our swimmers at every meet and organized the setup of our home meets.
  • Gator Swamp Stomp - Jane Estes & Holly Malcolm - They provided a fabulous night on the bayou for the adults of the HG Community.
  • Gator Gallop - Jan McElhiney & Margie Bradley - They organized our annual Fun Run for the entire neighborhood that benefits the swim team.
  • Gator Buddies - Janette Wenger - She provides every gator swimmer with a buddy to be a friend, fan enthusiast, champion, hero, partner, mentor, supporter, and teammate.
  • Gator Gear - Shelley Thompson - She is the reason our swimmers look so darn cute in the summer with their gator green swimsuits, shorts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, caps, hats, etc.
  • Heating - Julie Hanna - She keeps our swimmers organized and in their chairs before their race at every meet. She does a great job!
  • Luminaries and Butter Braids - Suzette Loving & Molly Brandsma - They lit up "The Hood" this past holiday season. Thank you neighbors for support.
  • Record Board - Amy Kurtz - This board is where the Gator swimmers look to set goals for the season. To break a swim record is worth serious bragging rights.
  • Scoring - Amy Kurtz, Vida Melvin & Cathy Musselwhite - They input all of our swimmers' times at our home meets, ran the results and produced the labels for ribbons.
  • RMSL President - Amy Kurtz - She served as President of the RMSL for the 2014/2015 season.  Her leadership makes RMSL the very best.
  • Ribbons - Erin Applegate - Every Monday morning she brought a smile to our Gator faces by having their many ribbons ready for them.
  • Speeding Tickets - Meredith McKinnon - she made sure our coaches were able to issue tickets for swimmers who improved their time.
  • Sleigh Ride - Stafie Parker - She brought the Menchie's Fire Truck to us over the holiday season and provided a fun holiday experience for the entire neighborhood.
  • Social - Lisa Hansen and Kimberly Roose - They provided long lasting memories by organizing our age group social parties, pasta pep rally, and will throw our end-of-season Awards Banquet Saturday night. Party on Gators!
  • Starter/ Referee - Grant Seavall and Scott Cain - Thank you for running our meets smoothly, efficiently, and quickly. We can't thank you enough!
  • Stroke Judge Lead - Heather Best - She organized our team of stroke judges for each meet and then organized their classes and certification. The Stroke judges help our gators become better swimmers.
  • Treasurer - Ramy Hanna- He kept us on budget all year, keeps our coaches paid, reimburses us for our expenses, pays our dues and collects money on registration and so much more.
  • Timers - Shelley & Bob Thompson - They kept our volunteer timers in order for our home and away meets.
  • Gator Triathlon - Shelley Reed & Ann Anthes - This provides our swimmers with a triathlon experience through the HG neighborhood that is fun for all. The kids get a little taste of what a triathlon is all about.
  • Volunteer Coordinators - Stafie Parker and Mindy Wilson - The Gator Swim Team is run entirely by volunteers. These 2 volunteers helped us coordinate and assign volunteers for every meet and every social activity. They sent reminders every week and made sure everyone did their part. Volunteers are why we are a successful swim team and we have Stafie and Mindy to thank for taking on this role.

HOA BOARD - Thank you for your support and dedication to this swim team. Your help and enthusiasm for the Gators has been tremendous this season. We look forward to many more years of collaboration to make this a better team.

We would like to thank all of our Gator Families for swimming this 2015 Season. It is a commitment for both the parents and swimmers. We appreciate all of your volunteer hours, getting your swimmers to practice and your support in all of the Gator events. You are the reason why the Parent Reps love their job.

And Finally, our Dear Gator Coaches - Rachel Getz, Nate Kizla, Bria Busta, Jack Smith, Bryce Johnson, Emily Lepetsos, Izzy Benasso, Paige Johnson, Nicole Seavall, and Allison Smith. This is a group of coaches, old and new, that came together and worked as a team throughout the season. They have provided a summer of fun, laughter, enthusiasm, joy, friendship, companionship, counseling and lasting memories for every one of our swimmers. They have demonstrated leadership and professionalism on a daily basis. These coaches have impacted our swimmers that will not be forgotten. As Gator Parents, we are proud of you and we thank you.

As the saying goes:

See you later, alligator

After a while, crocodile

See you in the summer of 2016. Don't forget to order your Luminaries and Butter Braids for the holiday season.
