May 2015

The lights are on! After a bit of typical moaning and groaning about having to "light up" our front yard for compliance with the covenants, we were really pleased to see the end result. Even if you have an original light post or sconce, it's always worth revisiting your lighting plans (with ACC approval of course) to give a bit of enhanced curb appeal and appraisal value to your home and the neighborhood. Be sure it's all tied to a photoelectric cell as well so you never have to think about it.

All this rain has Heritage Greener than ever! As I do every year, I'll ask everyone to trim up those trees on your property. It's not just the length of the limbs and keeping them within your lot, but also the base of those old Pines and Spruces to be trimmed up a few feet off the ground. Snuffleupagus is not attractive in your yard.

Now that it's May, get out and party with your neighbors on the 16th at the Rat Pack Party and let's set a new record attendance at the Gator Gallop fun walk/run to raise money for our neighborhood swim team on Memorial Day, May, 25th.  The pool opens on May 23rd at noon, so PLEASE begin the extended process of spring body grooming for the benefit of your neighbors (refer back to my link on Snuffleupagus for a visual).

Happy Mothers Day to all the exceptional mom's in our neighborhood (especially mine)!

Heritage Greens Swimming Pool

Hot summer days, the smell of fresh cut grass, the sounds of swim team and crystal clear water, what does all this mean? That's right it's almost pool time!!!

The pool officially opens on Saturday, May 23rd at 12 noon. Pool hours are 11AM to 8PM, and will extended to 9PM in July and August.  The pool will remain open through September 20th.

The pool rules are posted on the HG website and you can view them here. Additionally, I'd like to touch on a couple of rules that residents had questions on last year:
  • Guest policy - 2 guests per resident with a maximum or 5 guests per household.
  • All children 12 years of age and younger must to be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times!
  • ID required - Anyone 15 years or older is required to show picture ID for entrance into pool.
  • NO GLASS of any kind is allowed inside the gates of the pool.
  • Pool Hours:
    • June 11 am - 8 pm
    • July 11 am - 9 pm
    • Aug 11 am - 9 pm
    • Sept 11 am - 8 pm
The new lifeguards are very excited to make your time at the pool
enjoyable. Please take some time to introduce yourself and get to know them this summer. We have cleaned the grills and will continue to get them cleaned throughout the summer for your use. We are doing everything we can to make sure you and your family have a safe experience while at the pool.

The goal is to provide you with a great experience at the pool this
summer. We are open to questions, concerns and positive comments.
Please feel free to contact me any time.

Thinking about reserving the HG Community Room? Here are some tips for making the reservation process easy and painless:

The first step is to make sure you are registered on the Heritage Greens website and that all your information is accurate. Take a Walk, Bring your Leash

With the warmer weather, there are more neighbors and dogs out for walks.  Some dog owners are walking their dogs without a leash--both on the streets and on South Suburban Golf Course. Not only is this against the leash law, it is dangerous for the off-leash dogs and can be intimidating to children and other on-leash dogs.  Too many things can happen which are potentially harmful to dogs, owners and other residents in the neighborhood. Please, don't leave home without your leash!

Covenants Corner - Landscape Maintenance

Sure, some "weed" might be legal in Colorado......however,

Each Lot, including landscaping, shall be maintained by the Owner
thereof in good condition and repair. All owners shall mow, cut, prune,
clear, and remove from their land any unsightly brush, weeds, or other growth,
and shall remove from their land and growth infected with noxious
insects or contagious plant diseases.
The Cliff note version is: maintain your lot as if it were a premier lot in
a PREMIER south suburban area, and that is Heritage Greens!

John Nielsen, HOA Board

Oh, as for that other type of weed, remember all Federally banned substances are prohibited in Heritage Greens per the Rules and Regulations
Notes From the Board

Ever been bothered by "airplane" noise? If you have, you can report it to the Noise Complaint Hotline at Centennial Airport. The "noise line" is 303-790-4709. They will ask you to give them your address and sub-division (Heritage Greens)

Some times it seems we have quite a few flights overhead!

Sustainability
Each month the Sustainability committee aims to address the following areas:

Reduce:  Remember to put yard waste directly into your trash bin or a decomposable bag.

Reduce your carbon foot print and stay in shape! We all tend to jump in the car and go. We live in a wonderful community where there are many areas we can walk or ride to. As we approach summer think of jumping on your bike or walking the next time you head out. Below are some "one-way" distances from the Heritage Greens pool to nearby establishments many frequent.
  • jogging-women.jpg King Soopers - 1 mile
  • Menchies - .7
  • True Value - .82
  • Sunset Grill - .8
  • Tony's Market -  1.5
  • Starbucks on Quebec - 1.9
  • Life Time Fitness - 1.2
  • 24 Hour Fitness on County Line  - 1.7
  • South Suburban Golf Course .33
According to walkscore.comour neighborhood "walk score" is not great.  Let's see if we can improve this!!!

Reuse:  the neighborhood garage sale will be at the end of the summer.  Save your unwanted items.  Remember:  "One man's junk, is another man's treasure."  If you don't want to man it solo, find a neighbor to partner with.  It can be a lot of fun!  We see lots of usable items being put out for trash pick up.  Go ahead and put a "free" sign on it.  It is like giving someone permission to go ahead and take it before it ends up in the dump!

recycling_girl.jpg RecycleREMINDER:  At the pool and tennis courts, please use the yellow-topped bins for recycle items!  All of those tennis ball cans and water bottles should go in the yellow-topped bins.  Just make it a habit!

We are very lucky in Heritage Greens to have curbside recycling pickup, and most of us take advantage of this every two weeks.  There have been some questions regarding what can be recycled and in what condition the items must be before tossing them in the bin.  It couldn't be easier!
  • aluminum and steel (tin) cans--these do NOT need to be rinsed
  • aluminum foil--clean it off
  • cardboard and paperboard--must be clean and free of food waste.   Juice boxes. milk cartons, shiny cardboard, pizza boxes are all included.  Don't forget those toilet paper rolls!
  • newspapers, junk mail, phone books, magazines, office paper (you don't have to remove staples)
  • glass--clear, brown, or green.  Do NOT include ceramics, dishware, ovenware, mirror or window glass, crystal, or light bulbs
  • plastics--anything marked with a 1 through 7 in a triangle on the bottom.  This includes many things from the gardening stores.  Plastic containers should be as clean as possible with no food waste.
Waste Management may also buy some of your old electronics, including cell phones, laptops, music listening devices, and IPads.  For more information, go to WMPayStoreCycle.com

Repurpose:  If you have an idea you would like to share, please send us an email:hendrixtz@aol.com

Reeducate:  We all take a lot of pride in our neighborhood and do our very best to keep our houses and yards looking great.  However, some of this comes with a price.   Most of us probably have weedkillers and products like RoundUp in our garages and pull them out to blast away unwanted weeds and grasses.  We have been told by the manufacturers, erroneously, that these products were of low toxicity.   Recent studies have shown that both the active and inactive ingredients in these products can be very dangerous to our health and environment.  They have been linked with non-Hodgin Lymphoma, developmental abnormalities, and spontaneous abortions.  They have also been detected in surface water which makes it a potential drinking water pollutant.

There are alternatives to these toxic products.  They may take repeat applications or a little elbow grease, but they can be effective without being harmful to our bodies, pets, and earth.  Natria Grass and Weed Killer is a spray that can be purchased at stores such as the Big Tool Box.  It's active ingredient is ammoniated soap and the reviews are very favorable.  There are numerous recipes for a homemade weed killer that can be found on the internet.  (Mix 1 gallon white vinegar with 1 cup salt and 1 tablespoon liquid blue Dawn dish soap;  trim the weeds with garden shears to open the plant to receive the formula).  And, of course, there is the old fashioned way of pulling the weeds by hand (try to get the root).  A dandelion fork can be purchased for under $5.00.

If you need an insecticide, there are many products that can be purchased at any garden center.  But remember, there are many insects that are beneficial so use care to not harm them.
