October 2014

Wow! This President's Pen is longer than most, but there is a bunch of great information to share this month!

We really got pelted in that recent storm. I hope you're home had minimal damage and it was great to see everyone come together for such a fast cleanup. With every challenge comes an opportunity. For some, it will be a free roof. For others, it's a chance to share how the new roof held up. I hope you'll join the conversation titled "Roofs that weathered the storm" on our message board. This gives great feedback for our ACC and helps homeowners select products that have been tested in real life scenarios. Please also post any fun or amazing images you have from the storm on our community Facebook page.

A couple dates we hope you'll mark on your calendar. I want to ask for your support in getting out to see the premiere of "Touch the Wall" on Saturday, November 15 at the Buell Theater. The film is a documentary of the incredible journey to the 2012 Olympics of our own Missy Franklin. The Gator parent reps (Kristin and Nancy) have provided details below for you to get tickets and wear your Heritage Greens colors! What a great chance to come together as a community in force. I hope we'll see homeowners of all ages there to support such a positive role model. In addition, the neighborhood Oktoberfest party is Saturday, October 25 and is a family oriented social event for all.

As we near the end of the year, it's time to revisit the depth of our volunteer bench for 2015. This is truly one of the most active communities in Colorado (not just Denver) for selfless volunteering in both the neighborhood and the community. I challenge everyone to go to the website and click on the "Board and Volunteers" tab. You'll see over 30 names in a host of roles to align with different causes. You won't see this in many (if any) other communities. These same names are also found on the local PTO boards, charitable boards, and city initiatives. Simply stated, others need to step up before we burn people out. If you value all the neighborhood has to offer, please email me and join us in keeping it great.

As a final note, the HOA continues to focus on being very proactive with homeowners to drive awareness and prevent unnecessary issues related to covenants and regulations. As an example, you should have received the recent letter about post lights that went to all homeowners. We saw a trend of lights being removed during landscaping/renovation and frankly, many just didn't realize that they are required to be there. We hope this saves the majority of homeowners from accidentally removing their lights in the future and it will help to correct the non-compliant homes so we have a well lit neighborhood for all.

Break out the pumpkins and candy!

Hail Damage?

Please remember that ANY changes to the exterior of your house, including replacing siding, windows or a new roof, require advanced approval from the Architectural Control Committee. Please review the documents below.

"Touch the Wall" Film Premiere

The film will premiere on Saturday, November 15, at 2 p.m. at Denver's Buell Theatre.  Filmmakers Grant Berbeito and Christo Brock will be present along with Gold-medalist Missy Franklin and Silver-medalist Kara Lynn Joyce, for a red carpet presentation and an on-stage Q&A.

ACC Corner - Covenant Corner

Just a gentle reminder that Heritage Greens is a "Covenant Community". Our covenants are readily available on the HG HOA Documents web page under Covenants, Bylaws and Amendments.

Outside Storage
Under Article VI, Use Restrictions, section O.
"All clotheslines, equipment, GARBAGE CANS, service yards, woodpiles or STORAGE PILES shall be kept screened by adequate planting or fencing as herein permitted so as to CONCEAL THEM FROM VIEW from neighboring lots and streets."

A basic interpretation of this is if you are storing items outside, say on the side of your home, and they can be viewed from the street, you are in violation of this covenant. Please do your part in keeping Heritage Greens the PREMIER COMMUNITY that it is!

Safety Update

Over the Labor Day weekend a home in HG that was listed for sale and not occupied, was burglarized. The home had been 'staged' with high-end stainless steel appliances. Entry had been made through a side door of the garage and then into the home. The microwave, stove top, refrigerator and oven were removed. More than likely a truck had been backed into the garage, appliances loaded, truck left and garage door shut.

The incident was reported to the Arapahoe Country Sheriff's Office and it appears a sophisticated group may be getting their burglary leads from homes for sale on the internet where  all those shinny appliances are for all to see.

Now for the important stuff. Keep your eyes and ears open, do not be afraid to report suspicious behavior to the Arapahoe County Sheriffs Office non-emergency number, 303-795-471. You can also notify me via email so I can track incidents.

Recycling - Leaves and Prescription Drugs

Try to put leaves directly in your trash bin or recyclable bags. It helps the decomposition process at the landfill.

Prescription and non-prescription drugs can be dropped off anonymously year-round at the Sheriff's office, 13101 E. Bronco Pkwy in Centennial, Monday-Friday, 7 am - 6 pm. All drugs must be in a clear, plastic zip-lock bag. They will be screened for compliance and then you can place them in the drop box. Please dispose of non-wanted drugs safely and keep them out of the landfill and water supplies!

Thank you to all the folks who left their towels at the pool this summer.  We delivered about 40+ to the Denver Rescue Mission. They were greatly appreciated.

Tennis Season Comes to a Close

tennis Another league tennis season has come to a close; it sure goes by fast! HG had several teams go to playoffs; congrats to all of the teams that made it. One South Suburban team consisting of Heritage Greens ladies placed 3rd at sectionals which is fantastic!

Many thanks to all the team captains!  There are so many league players and I know they all appreciate the extra effort put in by all the captains.

We are still having a problem with people booking courts, not using them and not cancelling the reservation. Please show consideration and make sure to cancel a reservation when deciding not to use it.

Thank you-

Neighbors and Nonprofits: Aspen Academy

We chose Aspen Academy for middle school for our son Taylor. We love the small class size, emphasis on leadership and service as well as the capability to expand learning where a child is specifically interested/talented. The environment and teachers are engaging and extremely positive.

If you want to learn more about Aspen Academy, come to the Admissions Open House on Saturday, November 8 from 10 AM-1 PM. Prospective families and applicants are invited to learn more about the academics, programming, and extracurricular activities in an interactive setting. Centennial #13 on Best Places to Live in America

Laurie Reed/ Courtesy of the City of Centennial
Money Magazine revealed its prestigious Best Places to Live in America list, and Centennial ranks #13 of 50.

Coyotes

I just wanted to forewarn residents who live along the golf course across from the pool and down Links Pkwy, the coyotes have moved up into our area, in the corner, after having been in the southern part of the course most of this year. We are at 4828 E. Mineral and have had them in our backyard several times. Aware of our presence but totally unafraid, they see us but just hang out and give us "I dare you" looks. There are 6-8 in the pack, from what we've seen. They have advanced, followed after our little dog though on the leash when we take her out at night. Yelling at them and throwing rocks (what the Department of Wildlife and Arapahoe County Sheriff office recommend) just makes them take a step back but they do not leave, like they're waiting for the opportunity to pounce.

We were advised to report any aggressive or menacing coyotes to Arapahoe County Sheriffs Office non-emergency number 303-795-471 as they keep track of these occurrences and will take action if numerous reports and calls have been made.

Keep your pets in at night and when you do have to take them out to do their business, put them on a leash so you can control your pet from going after them. The coyotes will not hesitate to hop the split rail fences we are required to have along the golf course but have been known to even hop over a 6' fence. Be safe.
