June 2014

I hope you had a great May and were able to participate in the many great activities hosted by the neighborhood! The Martini social was a big success as were the tennis tournament, gator gallop, swim team kickoff and opening of our pool. Thanks to all that made these possible.

If you've driven by the pool recently you may have also noticed the beautiful statues donated by the Schmeling family. What an incredible addition to the common areas! You can read more about it below in the newsletter.

This month officially kicks off summer here in Heritage Greens, and as always we ask for your help with some basic neighborly upkeep. PLEASE hide you trash cans, keep barking dogs inside, and trim your trees that impede on sidewalks or your neighbor's property. This simple courtesy will help us avoid the lion share of issues we deal with regularly. Thanks so much for your help! You'll now be seeing a Covenants Corner article in each newsletter to drive awareness of a different topic each month for home owners. This is a great way to get familiar with our covenants.

On a side note, I am asking for volunteers to make a serious campaign for the renovation and upgrading of the Heritage Greens Shopping Center which we all see daily and looks awful. We love the businesses there but they need our help in applying pressure on the landlords and the city to make this area look deserving of our great community. If you have time and passion to help, please email or call me directly. On a similar note, we have an amazing neighborhood task team that is deeply involved in the Comcast expansion plans. If you'd like to know more contact Jeff Brown directly.

Lastly, be on the lookout for details on upcoming social events such as the 4th of July party. Call or email if you need anything. We are here to help.

"Dance with Me" a tribute to Sydney Schmeling

On January 12, 2012 we lost our beautiful 8-year-old daughter to a rare form of brain cancer.

Sydney lived her life with great joy! Her vibrant smile could melt the hearts of those around her. Her beautiful eyes reflected her passions for life and her mischievous spirit.

To honor Sydney's life and her spirit, the "Dance with Me" statues were purchased through the Sydney Schmeling Memorial Fund and now grace one of the places she loved the most, the Heritage Greens pool area. Sydney spent her summers as a Heritage Greens Gator and she enjoyed countless hours poolside with her friends and family. For many of us that can still picture Sydney playing outside the pool gates, it brings great joy to see her statue now greeting everyone who enters the pool.

The most cherished thing in Sydney's life was her family. The bond that she shared with her siblings was exceptionally strong and a major source of strength during her battle with cancer. For that reason, our four children dance together now in her memorial in a circle that represents the special relationship that was shared among them.

Shortly after we learned about Sydney's illness, a little green stuffed frog was left on our doorstep with a note that read "F.R.O.G. Fully Rely on God".  From that moment, frogs became a symbol of hope and encouragement to our family. Frogs for Sydney began to mysteriously appear everywhere! They were left on our doorstep, placed in her backpack at school, sent through the mail, and drawn on cards, notes, and clothing! Frogs began appearing on every bulletin board at her school and friends and family began wearing frog necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Frogs were even appearing as edible cookies, cupcakes and candies.

But it was that first stuffed "Froggie" that went to every cancer treatment with us, every vacation, and every family event and appeared in every picture. Sydney slept with "Froggie" every night and he was wrapped in her arms as she left us and earned her Angel Wings.

That is why you will notice that a frog sits at the base of her statue enjoying the dance too!

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our friends and neighbors in the Heritage Greens community for their tremendous love, support and generosity during Sydney's journey. We sincerely hope that the four siblings and their "frog with an attitude" bring you a sense of joy and make you smile when you see them just as Sydney did when she was here with us.

Website Feature: Find a Sitter

Never say you can't find a sitter!

The Find a Sitter section of the website is full of great neighborhood teens who are interested in baby sitting, pet sitting or house sitting. There is background information on each sitter and often a photograph too. Please take a look and help a teen earn some extra money this summer!

A few hints for sitters:
- Tell us your age in your listing (babysitting since you were 11 is good to know, but only if we know how old you are now)
- Tell us approximately where you live, so we know if you can walk or ride your bike
- Tell us if the phone number is your cell or your home and if you prefer texts or calls

Architectural Control Committee Corner - Electric Post Lights

Heritage Greens is a Covenant Community and it maintains an Architectural Control Committee (ACC) which regulates the external design, appearance and location of improvements and alterations to properties.

In an effort to be more visible and responsive to the homeowners, we will be giving updates monthly in the HG Newsletter highlighting our covenants.

An example of this is, per our Covenant Bylaws and Amendments, page 7 section L, "Each resident shall maintain at least one electric post light between the house and the street, which said light shall be operated by a photo-electric cell or other automatic device so that it will be lighted automatically during hours of darkness."

Recently, it was brought to the ACC's attention, that there are several homes in the neighborhood where this light was no longer functioning or non-existent. We request, that if this applies to your home, that this be corrected. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. Let's all work to keep Heritage Greens a great place to live!

John Nielsen, ACC
