December 2012
The Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of the Heritage Greens Homeowners Association will be held Wednesday, December 12, 2012.  This will be the second annual meeting we have been able to host in the new community room located in the pool building.

Light appetizers and drinks will be available starting at 6:00 p.m.  The meeting will commence at 7:00 p.m.

The general purpose of the meeting is to provide the neighbors with an update on association matters over the past year and to elect next year's board of directors.  Although and RSVP is not required, please do email the board so that we may get an estimated head count for the meeting: vp@heritagegreens.org.

Around the 'Hood

Holiday Lighting

You may have noticed that the HG holiday lights at the three entrances to the neighborhood are not yet functioning.  The lights were installed by Keeson Landscaping more than two weeks ago, so they would be ready for lighting just after Thanksgiving.  But, of course, we ran into electrical issues with some of the outlets.  It has taken longer than expected for the electrician retained by the Heritage Greens Metropolitan District to come by to complete these repairs.  Once the repairs are made, the neighborhood will be lit.  Hopefully everything will be working fine by the time you read this newsletter.

We will also be having our annual Holiday Lights Decorating Contest so get your house all lit up and we'll let you know who wins the prize next month!

Does It Still Snow in Colorado?

The Heritage Greens landscape contractor has completed all work under its annual contract.  Fall clean-up has been completed and all systems winterized.  JLS Landscape & Sprinkler, Inc. will also serve as our snow removal contractor this winter; same as last year.  Please keep in mind our contract does not call for them to perform any work unless the community sidewalks receive at least three inches of accumulation and four inches in the parking lot at the pool building.  Please notify Cheryl at ACCU, Inc. if you spot any issues with snow removal or dangerous ice accumulation in the community areas.

Sidewalks and Gutters

Please also remember as a resident of the City of Centennial, you are required to shovel your walks within a 24-hour period of snow accumulation.  In case you haven't noticed, we are a community of active residents.  We have lots of walkers, runners, cyclists and kids playing.  Please respect the use and safety of all by doing your part in keeping your sidewalks cleared.

The neighborhood looks great.  We do ask that you take one last look around and make sure your property is ready for the winter.  The City does not sweep our streets as often as we would like.  Make sure your gutters are cleaned of all leaves and debris.  Also, if you have sod, bushes or other shrubs which are overgrowing onto your sidewalk, please be sure to trim those back.  This is also true of any weeds (and we have even seen some small trees) growing through the cracks on sidewalks and in the gutters.  Maintaining the sidewalk bordering your property is the responsibility of each homeowner.   And if your sidewalk or gutter needs repair or replacement, I encourage you to visit the City of Centennial website and report the issue.  They are usually responsive to these issues although it can take up to a year for repairs to occur.  Better than paying for it yourself.

Thanks.  Happy Holidays!  Shawn McDermott

Neighbors and Nonprofits:
25th Annual Inner City Christmas Party

The youth at St. Thomas More Parish want to thank the residents of Heritage Greens for their generous support in the past years. Your support makes it possible to hold this event for 4- and 5-year-olds from Denver Public Schools.

On December 6, hundreds of young children will come to St. Thomas More for a day of celebration and fun. The children will enjoy a puppet show, face painting, food, a magic show, balloon animals, coloring, playing, and, of course, a visit and gift from Santa Claus.

In the past, Heritage Greens has been a generous sponsor to help with the cost of putting on such an event. Food, entertainment, supplies and gifts (approximately $25 for each child) need to be purchased or donated. Remember, for many of these children, this will be some of the few gifts they will receive. Any donation you could make would be appreciated. Please mail your tax-deductible check, payable to St. Thomas More Church, to 8035 S. Quebec St., Centennial, Colorado 80112, attention David Tschumper.

The party is December 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in McClellan Hall. If you would like to come and help the teenagers of STM, or make cookies, or serve lunch, please contact David Tschumper in the Youth Ministry Office at youth@stthomasmore.org

Guest Article: Bullying

In today's classrooms, playgrounds, and school buses, bullying is such a widespread problem that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services started the "Stop Bullying Now" campaign (www.stopbullying.gov). We now have "zero tolerance" policies but with all the hype and one-strike-and-you're-out efforts, the bullies keep on bullying. This may leave many children feeling hopeless and scared. But they (and you!) are not alone in this. You can take a stand against bullying.

Some Facts About Bullying:

  • 28% of students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied during the 2008-2009 school year.
    • Of these students, 19% reported being made fun of, called names, or insulted, and 17% the subject of rumors. Most acts of bullying do not include physical harm or threat of physical harm.
  • Incidents of bullying appear to be similar among boys and girls, with incidents of physical bullying being slightly higher in boys.
  • The majority of bullying incidents occur in the classroom, hallway, or stairwell.
  • Children and adolescents tell adults about being bullied only about one-third of the time.

From the U.S. Department of Education.

Is Your Child Being Bullied?

Most children and teens don't tell their parents, so it is important that you look for the early signs of bullying and talk to your child if you notice the following:

  • Unexplained cuts, scrapes, or bruises
  • Unexplained loss or damage of personal belongings including food or money
  • Avoidance or fear of school, the bus, or activities with peers
  • Physical complaints (headaches, stomachaches) or frequent visits to the nurse
  • Difficulty sleeping, nightmares, or changes in eating habits
  • Sudden and significant drop in grades or a loss of interest in schoolwork

What Can You Do?

If you suspect your child is being bullied, ask your child indirect questions (that are unlikely to be answered with "fine") about his/her experience at school or riding the bus, such as:

  • "What was lunch time like at school today?" "Who do you like to sit with at lunch?"
  • "What was something good that happened at school today? Did anything happen at today that bothered you?"
  • "What is it like to ride the bus?" "Are there any kids you don't like to sit near?"

You can also ask direct questions to get conversations going:

  • "What does bullying mean to you? Why do you think people bully?"
  • "What do you think parents, teachers, or students can do to stop bullying?"
  • "How would it make you feel to see someone getting bullied?"
  • "Have you ever tried to help someone who was being bullied?"

If you discover that your child has been a victim of bullying, stay calm and listen. Do not tell your child to ignore the problem or retaliate. Ask your child what solutions he or she has in mind and what is needed to feel safe. You may need to help younger kids by proposing solutions. Advocate for your child with school personnel. Consistent effort is often required to stop bullying, so be persistent and don't give up!
