What's your Testimony?...by Ed Potts

The word testimony is usually associated with what someone says while formally promising to tell the truth, as in a court of law. It is a statement of what that person has seen, heard, done, or in some other way experienced, and which that person sincerely believes to be true.

But what does testimony mean to a Christian? In the Bible, testimony appears 76 times and its plural, testimonies, appears 36 times, for a total of 1121. God obviously thought this was an important word.

Your testimony is the story of your encounter with God
For the Christian, a testimony should be a lifestyle that openly acknowledges our personal experience in accepting and following Jesus Christ. This acknowledgement must be public because its purpose is to tell others what has taken place in our lives.

Testimonies often involve both words and actions. But it's the perception of others that influences whether or not they believe us. Who do they perceive us to be? Do they know what is important to us? Have they heard what we believe to be true?

If perception is so important, then what others hear and see should be direct reflections of Christ in us as we follow Him. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.2

We are the Evidence
We are so besieged by the world and its influences. The lines of what we should do and what we should avoid become blurred, leading to choices that are not a reflection of Christ in us. Sometimes they are misleading to our family and friends...even to ourselves.

What's your testimony? Are your words and actions (and thoughts) reflecting Christ in you?

No? Then work on changing that. You can do this, and people will see Christ in you. For we know that we can do everything through Him who gives me strength3.

Seek God first4 and may your testimony be a reflection of Christ living in you!
Serving Him,

Ed
