A Miracle For Me...by Sue Molenda

I read the anguished cry of a man whose entire world had crumbled with a dismal diagnosis. I sent a message of support and encouragement and also posted it on Facebook. As a fellow cancer patient, I know the hopelessness and fear of a life unfulfilled.

I wanted to help him find his reason to live, as I hoped to find my own. But it was hard to tell if it had helped him. Yet, quite unexpectedly, a little holiday miracle began to happen for me.

People were responding to my post! It was helping and inspiring themThen there was a comment from Chuck Graham, whose Notes of Encouragement have comforted me for years, through so much...

A life preserver tossed against a bright blue sky
a dear friend committing suicide...grief giving way to despair...my seriously ill daughter aging out of my insurance...bankruptcy...my marriage falling apart...my diagnosis of cancer...eight major surgeries, countless minor ones, and their myriad complications...radiation damage and chemo side-effects...a doctor promising to extend my life from six months to at least twenty-four.

My friend, Chuck...whose Notes and Facebook comments and friendship encouraged me through all of that...wrote, "Sue, I think this might make a good and much needed Note..."

Chuck had no idea how much his invitation to encourage others would, in turn, encourage me. I have suffered so many failures and struggles that left me feeling I have nothing worthwhile to say. Maybe I haven't become useless to God and his Kingdom, after all.

And so, for your encouragement, here is the piece Chuck prompted me to share. Everyone has struggles but holidays are especially tough for many people. A fellow cancer patient, particularly despondent, asked, "Why me?" I wrote him this response:

There will never be an answer this side of Paradise. "In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" came to mind just now, and I almost laugh. I smile. This world is not our home, but we are in it for a reason. Think of it all as one big, divine game. Is God laughing at us? Is he a sadist?

I think not.

I feel a weird kind of joy, after battling this cancer for several years. It felt like a death sentence. But I am very much alive. Death is not going to win. I am IN this body, this Earth suit that once was young and strong and lovely but has been poisoned, cut, burned, loved, spurned, seduced, used, rejected, abused, hugged, comforted, aggrieved, delighted, thrilled, terrified, bored, mutilated, modified, repaired, destroyed, retrofitted, overhauled, and made to do amazing things I never knew a body could endure.

This is my Earth Suit. It is my costume.

This is my roller coaster car. And I will ride it through the terror, pain, hilarity, anguish, joy, insanity, laughter, depravity, deprivation, alteration, abundance, lack, deterioration and all the way through to its inevitable disintegration. It is a wild ride and a frightening one.
Twisting roller coaster with rises and falls

But hang on. This life is only an amusement ride.

The theme park will be closing soon. But wait until you see what's coming next. We ain't seen nothing yet. Stick around. There's fun ahead. You're gonna love it. But don't go yet. Your ticket's punched. But wait in line. It's not your time. But it will be sublime!

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John 16:33, NKJV
