A darkened room, a door slightly open, and golden light streaming in

Be patient, stand firm as you wait
on the Lord. He stands at the door!

Closed Doors...by Janet Perez Eckles

After four long years of work...of visits to the American consulate in La Paz, Bolivia...of gathering documents required by the U.S. Immigration Department, finally my parents received the visa needed to enter the U.S.

My family and I soon arrived in Miami, Florida. With documents in hand and hope in our hearts, we began our life in America.

At twelve-years-old, this was my first time out of my hometown of La Paz. Everything in Miami's airport seemed so big, new, amazingly clean, a tad strange, and very intimidating.

With one hand, I gripped my Mom's arm, and with the other, I pointed at a most bizarre stairway. "Those steps are moving!" I had never seen an escalator before.

But what left me in awe were the automatic doors. How in the world did doors know someone was approaching and to open at just the precise moment? We had certainly come to a strange land.

Now decades later, I wish I had such doors all around me, but on my terms.

The moment I approach, they would open. While working toward my next endeavor, they would swing wide, showing me the way. When I try to remove obstacles, they would part, displaying the perfect answer. And oh what joy if they would open according to my timing.

But in real life, doors do not always open. And when they remain closed, that's when anxiety visits, fear grips, and stress builds.

With doors of opportunity closed, waves of impatience, doubt, and uncertainty can wash away our peace and we think we're falling apart from the stress. Have you been there?

But even as they remain closed, God's love sustains us. His guidance continues. His comfort draws near. And peace...His peace...returns to us. It's like King David once wrote:

When I said, "My foot is slipping," your love, O Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul. Psalm 94:18-19

You know, God just might be putting you and me to the test. As we wait for Him to open that door, do we truly believe that He will? Do we trust in His timing. Do we maintain our passion and joy as we sit in the waiting room of faith?

When God opens the doors in our lives, may He find us ready to follow Him.

Seeing the best in life,

Janet
