Traffic moving along a US Interstate Highway

A man's heart plans his way,
but the LORD directs his steps.
Proverbs 16:9

God still moves among us
Volume XV, Issue 38
September 21, 2015

God can move in some strange ways. All good, but strange. At least they can seem strange to us, especially when we are not aware He is even doing anything. For example...

A friend carefully planned his retirement. He and his wife saved some money and built their dream house far from the big city. He could work there and occasionally commute to his office.

Before the big move, he felt the urge to give himself an early retirement present. Strange since that day was more than a year away. Yet off he went and ordered a brand new truck. But this was no ordinary truck. It came with awesome, sparkly gadgets. It had...sensors.

One set could detect traffic ahead and automatically slow the truck to avoid collision. Two others, upon "seeing" the truck drifting to the left or right, could guide it back to the center of the lane.

The specially built truck did not arrive for several months, but was well worth the wait. It was amazing. All those gadgets and buttons and knobs. Oh my. Now for life in the new house.

One day my friend had to go to the office and decided to take the truck. Much of the 1½ hour journey would be on a multi-lane, divided highway, rolling along at 70 mph. Once on the highway, he set the cruise control, took a sip of Coke, eased into his ever-so-comfy leather seat, and blacked out.

Yes. Blacked out! And he completely lost control of his beautiful, brand new truck.

God works in strange ways. We're not sure what's going on or why, and we want to know. We may be confused, afraid, and even angry. But God has told us: My thoughts are not your thoughts, your ways are not my ways, for my ways and thoughts are higher. (see Isaiah 55:8-9)

It all comes down to this...Trust me. Do we trust God with His plans for our future? Do we trust Him with the lives of those we love? When we do not see where He is leading, will we still follow?

After a minute or two, my friend awoke, traveling down the highway as though nothing had happened. The truck had taken over.

As the road turned to the left or right, the truck changed directions, always safely staying in its lane. As traffic speeds varied, the truck responded. When my friend came to, his truck was behind an 18-wheeler and had slowed to match its speed. The only tragedy was the spilt Coke.

What we call the past, present and future, God sees in the now. Before my friend planned for the future, God knew he would black out that day. At just the right time, He led him to that special truck---a gift...to himself...long before retirement. How strange.

May we encourage each other to give God the control that will keep us safely on His path.

Take care & be God's,

Chuck
