The Milky Way a million stars, and the light of a village far away

They reject Him as King
because they want to rule.

May God break our hardened hearts!

Volume XIV, Issue 15

April 14, 2014

I stood on the mountain and gazed into the cold night sky. Millions of sparkling stars scattered from horizon to horizon. The universe sang of God's majesty. A different light, dull and paler, shone from the city below. A wave of sorrow swept over me. Many do not know Him. Many choose not to.

Recently I saw a new science series, Cosmos. It's actually a retelling of an earlier one, this time with better graphics and animation. As the first images flowed across my TV screen, I got excited at the opportunity to learn more about God's great universe.

The images were beautiful and the new data amazing, all as expected. What I did not expect was to be attacked. The individual who hosts the show does not believe in God and he took this opportunity specifically to demean Christians, using of all things the story of a Catholic monk.

The monk believed there was more to the stars and planets than what could be seen, but his beliefs cost him. The host described in detail how the man was mistreated, scorned, mocked, imprisoned, and beaten. Finally, because the man refused to recant his beliefs, he was publicly killed.

According to the host, the evil party responsible was "the church." He intentionally never mentioned the desires of educated men wanting only to maintain power. He cleverly avoided any hint that their actions directly opposed the commands of Jesus. He purposefully fashioned the entire Body of Christ into one specific group, the Roman Catholic Church, ignoring all other believers.

A wave of sorrow swept over me, for this host and all influenced by his deception. The story of the poor monk was a horrible point of history, not science. It had nothing to do with the Cosmos itself.

What would drive the host to use extreme measures to attack those who follow Christ? Why was his heart so hardened that he could find value in stars and planets but not in fellow human beings? How with integrity could he demean people of faith in God with the story of a man whose beliefs about the earth, sun, stars, and universe resulted from his own faith in God?

He does not know God. He chooses not to. And my first reaction was anger. I believe this series began just before Easter as a means to belittle the Christian faith and drive us away from God. But instead, the timing has drawn me closer to Him. And I realize I was wrong to be angry.

As Jesus approached Jerusalem, He wept over it. If you had only known on this day what would bring you peace-but now it is hidden from your eyes. Your destruction will come because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you. Luke 19:41-44

Jesus did not see the buildings of a city, but the hearts of its people. They would praise Him when they thought He would give them what they wanted and hate Him when He did not. They would mistreat, scorn, mock, imprison, and beat Him. And because He would refuse to recant His teachings, He would be publicly killed. Yet He cried for them for they did not know what they were doing.

How can I love God and have anger toward this man? How can I follow Jesus and be a slave to my emotions? How can I hear His Spirit and choose not to love those He died for? Those in Jerusalem rejected Christ as King because they wanted to rule. Am I any better?

There is hope for me. There is hope for you. And He comes to us, gentle and riding on a donkey (Matthew 21:5). Behold, our King has entered the city. Do you know Him? Do you choose to?

Take care & be God's,

Chuck
