Blank expression. Stoic appearance. Apathetic. Indifferent. Carrying on a routine existence. Does this show the life we're supposed to live?
Jesus said, I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10) But what does it mean to "have life to the full"? The answer is in three words: life, full, have.
Life here is the word zoe. This refers to the absolute fullness of life which---and this is really important---belongs to God. It's the life He has given you, the life He's called you to live.
Full, also translated as abundantly, is the word perissos, which means (i) incapable of being measured and (ii) beyond imagination. Jesus wants you to have the absolute fullness of life to that extent.
Have is the little word echo and tells us even more. Think of yelling into a canyon. Everyone can hear the echo, yet it isn't just sound being reflected. It's a voice---your voice. And what happens when you hear that voice? You smile. The meaning behind echo is to reflect and enjoy.
Several nights a week at Downtown Disney, you'll find Dominic Gaudious playing his guitar (or two or three). Fingers fly along the neck and across the strings. Combining the exotic, sometimes haunting, tones of a didjeridoo (or two or three), he creates music that one instant is light and airy, then the next reaches into your soul. He's quite good, amazing in fact. But there's something else.
He clearly enjoys what he's doing. There's excitement in his playing, his music, and his interaction with the crowd. Even while performing complicated movements on the guitar, he'll stroll out, mingle a bit, and ham it up with adults and kids alike. They are drawn to the music, but mesmerized by the man.
As the crowd listens, his joy and excitement become theirs. Toes tap. Hands clap. Bodies sway. Some even dance. But always there are smiles, leaping from the happy minstrel to appreciative wanderers who need a smile (or two or three). They, in turn, share their smiles with those they pass along the way.
That's the idea of what Jesus was talking about. He wants us to have the absolute fullness of life that belongs to God...a life beyond anything we can imagine...a life of joy and excitement that reflects out to others so they, too, may have life to the full...a life worth living...a life worth sharing.
Have life to the full. Share it with those who cross your path. And in all you do, be the echo of God.
