Between traveling and sending the kids off to camp - summer can be a hot time for identity theft.

With so much else to think about such as planning, packing, and securing your home, identity theft is probably the last thing on your mind. But Problem Solver Susan Hogan warns it's just as important as any other part of planning a trip.

When traveling, you should take a minimal amount of items containing sensitive personal information like Social Security cards, work ID, and extra credit cards. Also, it's important to contact your bank and credit card companies to let them know when and where you're traveling so they can better monitor fraud.

If you plan to stay in a hotel, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns of some common schemes, such as fake calls from the front desk.

RFID technology is present in approximately 200 million credit and identification cards. In addition, all United States passports issued since October 2006 also contain RFID chips. Short for Radio Frequency Identification, RFID technology allows the user to wave his or her card or passport in front of a scanner and automatically send a signal to an antenna embedded in the card.

Though RFID was meant to ease use, it has left millions of users vulnerable to electronic pickpocketing. Criminals can now construct their own RFID readers, which allows them to quickly and unknowingly steal private information. In electronic pickpocketing, the thief only needs to come close to the user's wallet with his or her hidden card reader to be successful. As a result, users need to actively guard their personal information. One way to do so is by purchasing a secured wallet, which blocks the signal from the makeshift RFID readers.

I picked up one of these while it was on QVC. I've had it and used it daily for the last 10 months. I really like it. It holds all my cards, money, checkbook, dollar bills, etc very well. It is very sturdy, the leather is quality, and surprisingly, it doesn't have any noticeable wear despite the daily grind. Would recommend it to my friends and family (in fact, I already have).
