Greetings!
As we near the end of another year, we invite you to participate in MCOPP's year-end meeting on Tuesday, November 6th from 10am-1pm. This extended meeting will feature presentations and discussion with HKHC partners from Chicago and the national HKHC Program Office. We look forward to learning more from them about their efforts, lessons learned, and how they are addressing sustainability.
This fall, we held the fifth annual UNCOM Walk for Wellness and an MCOPP Training Opportunity for direct- service staff. Read more about these happenings below.
We welcome your participation in MCOPP and with our subcommittees that are working on policy and environment change strategies focused on: (1) healthy food and beverages; (2) land use opportunities for active lifestyles, healthy eating, and recreation; (3) active living; and (4) curriculum and professional development. Please contact us if you are interested in serving on a subcommittee and note our meeting schedule to the right.
Join us in our mission of working together for healthy eating and active living. We envision a Milwaukee with reduced childhood obesity where the healthy choice is the easy choice. Thanks for your support of the Milwaukee Childhood Obesity Prevention Project.
Best wishes,
Sarah O'Connor (MCOPP Manager, United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee) & David Nelson (MCOPP Director, Medical College of Wisconsin) | |
UNCOM holds fifth annual Walk for Wellness at Silver Spring Neighborhood Center
On the evening of Friday, September 28th, approximately 500 people from across Milwaukee gathered outside of Silver Spring Neighborhood Center for a 1-mile walk around the Westlawn neighborhood, followed by a healthy meal and positive hip hop from Milwaukee's Figureheads. This was the fifth year of the annual UNCOM Walk for Wellness, an event that bring together people from UNCOM member agencies and Zilber Neighborhood Initiative partner neighborhoods to focus on the importance of healthy eating and active living. Thanks to all who participated and helped--you made it a great event!

MCOPP hosts youth-serving professionals for an engaging 2-hour staff training
| Yvonne D. Greer, MPH, RD, CD, CLC of Y-EAT Right leads the healthy snacks session |
On Friday, October 12th, eighteen staff from UNCOM member agencies and other Milwaukee community organizations came together at Neighborhood House of Milwaukee to learn more about nutrition and physical activity topics. MCOPP partners from Milwaukee organizations provided their expertise to make the training possible. Playworks Milwaukee led a session about fun indoor games and group management techniques. Y-Eat Right's Dietician and a Community Health Educator from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin led a session about easy-to-make healthy snack recipes. Partners from Milwaukee Public Schools and Marquette University led a session on developing Learning Intentions for youth so that youth have an understanding of the reasons it is important to eat healthy and be physically active. All staff participants received a binder of materials to take back and use at their respective agencies. The training materials will be available on the MCOPP website as well as by request (414-978-2023 or soconnor@uncom-milw.org). The next training will take place in mid-winter 2013.
