Hiking Summit Success

Hike Nova Scotia hosted the third annual Nova Scotia Hiking Summit from April 11 to 13 at the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro. With 80 people from all over the province (and even a few folks from out of province), we can safely say the Summit was a resounding success!

Thanks to all the participants for their good humour and company in the sessions and on the trails and to our excellent presenters. Go to our blog to learn more about the Summit and to view photos.

Call for Board Members & Nominations

Hike Nova Scotia seeks board members across the province who love hiking and can contribute to moving Hike NS forward. The Hike NS board is a working board. It's looking for board members who have the time and energy to devote to running this volunteer-driven organization. Help Hike NS achieve its mandate of creating a culture of hiking, walking and snowshoeing in our beautiful province. There are some perks; travel is reimbursed and lunch or snacks are provided for the five to six meetings per year. Board members are expected to contribute some hours each month to board work. Various positions are available. Contact Hike NS at [email protected] to express your interest in becoming a board member or nominate someone you think would be a good addition to the board. Check out the website

Save the Backlands

Hike NS recently joined the Backlands Coalition, based out of HRM, to lend support to ensure no loss of wildlife habitat in the HRM Backlands and to preserve them for natural, historical, cultural, conservation, educational, recreational and common use. Consider signing the Backlands Coalition Petition to HRM Council to vote against changing the Backlands' Urban Reserve designation.

Featured TrailCape Split

by Amanda Cashin

Arriving at the top of Cape Split can make one feel like a soaring bird. The trees dissipate and an open meadow with vast views of the Bay of Fundy awaits. And after an 8km climb it feels wonderful to finally be at the top.  At least for me, who typically enjoys a 4-6 km hike at the longest.

It isn't often that I have a chance to hike Cape Split. It is a 16km return hike, and because I am a pokey hiker who likes to sleep in on the weekends I just don't always have enough time to fit it into my day. But this past weekend I was reminded why I should get up earlier and drive the 1.5+ hrs from Halifax to Scots Bay more often. Read the full posting here.

Amanda Cashin is a Hike Nova Scotia board member and she has a blog of the hikes and adventures she takes, called Beachcomber & Trail-Roamer.
