The second semester is off to a fantastic start and many great things continue to take place at Maize High School. I continue to be amazed by the teamwork exhibited by the MHS faculty, and beam with pride seeing our students work hard to achieve their goals. As we celebrated the observance of the work and efforts by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I am reminded of a quote he made as an 18-year old in Georgia regarding education. "We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate." It is my mission to help ensure that all of our students get the true education they deserve. As always, there are many great things deserving of recognition along with a few reminders:
- Congratulations to all of our students who made the Principal's and Eagle Honor Rolls for the second term.
- The Maize High School Drama department will be presenting two productions in February:
o Waiting for Godot will be performed on February 5th at 3:15 and 7:30p.m. and on February 7th at 2:00p.m. in the Maize High School studio theatre (room C-13).
o Time Stands Still will be performed on February 4th at 3:15 and 7:30p.m. and on February 6th at 7:30 p.m. in the Maize High School auditorium.
- With enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year coming up, I encourage you to have conversations with your students about his or her schedule. If you have questions about certain classes, please give your counselors a call. It is oftentimes difficult to find a balance between saving students from themselves with extremely rigorous class loads and encouraging students to challenge themselves with more difficult classes. Our ultimate goal is to help prepare all of our students for life beyond high school - and that looks different for each student! Careful consideration needs to be given because once the schedules are set, changes can only be made if they meet the following criteria:
1. There is a mistake on the schedule,
2. The student wants to take a more advanced class,
3. A class was failed and needs to be re-taken,
4. Pre-requisites have not been met.
Please plan on attending parent-teacher conferences on either Wednesday, February 17th from 4:00-8:00p.m. or Thursday, February 18th from 12:00-8:00p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to visit face-to-face with your student's teachers with any concerns you might have, as well as to hear the amazing things your student is doing. Because of conferences, there will be no school on Thursday, February 18th and Friday, February 19th. At these conferences, one of our goals is to bring parents more information about the enrollment process, classes and career pathways offered, and helping plan each student's Individual Plan of Study (IPS). Please see the Counseling Office's information in this newsletter HERE.
- The Maize High School Thespian Troupe #3596 attended the Kansas Thespian Conference in January and received 1st place in Theatre Bowl and 2nd place in Competitive Improv. Sally Olmstead received a superior rating on her Individual Event in Solo Musical for the third year in a row.
- Congratulations to the Maize High School debate team on their 4th place finish at the state tournament! State qualifying team members include Sandy Carlo, Alexia Gonzalez, Meet Kapadia, Matt Warner, Justin Elwell-Cuddy, and Kyle Stutzman.
- December Students-of-the-Month:
o Katie Stanger: Mrs. McKaig said this about Katie: "Katie is the most up-beat student I see each day. Always positive, never an unkind word, helpful, a team player. She has a maturity about her beyond her years, perhaps because she has dealt with some challenges her classmates have not experienced. Great attendance and solid grades this semester! She's the kind of student who makes you thankful you're a teacher."
o Sawyer Barragan: Mrs. Prater said this about Sawyer: "Sawyer is willing to go above and beyond to help with ANYTHING from building sets to teaching choreography. He is an enthusiastic leader who is supportive of the goals of the group and provides encouragement for others."
- January Students-of-the-Month:
o Trevor Scheikofsky: Mrs. Hogan said this about Trevor: "Trevor tries hard on everything he does and has a great work ethic. He loves sports and treats everyone he meets with kindness. Trevor feels that you should meet each day with a positive attitude and likes to leave people a little happier then when he found them."
o Hayley Tice: Mrs. Shurts said this about Hayley: "Hayley Tice sets a great example of work ethic in class and does a great job working as a lab partner and team member. Hayley is also involved in multiple clubs and activities at MHS and most recently was a very active participant in the Deck the Halls with canned goods and recent FFA events. Hayley always shows great leadership and a desire to help others!"
I am looking forward to a great second semester. Please contact me if there is anything that we can do to help improve the high school experience for your student. I truly appreciate everyone's support.
With Eagle pride,
Dr. Chris Botts Principal Maize High School

Summer 2016

2016 SUMMER FACE TO FACE DRIVER EDUCATION INFORMATION
USD 266 Maize Schools will once again offer summer face-to-face driver education. Any student who turns 14 on or before June 1, 2016 and has, or will graduate 8th grade, by June 1st will be eligible to enroll in summer driver education. Students will attend two weeks of classes, starting Wednesday, June 1st and ending on Tuesday, June 14th (from 12:30pm to 3:30pm). Students will also complete at least five, one-hour driving sessions (schedule to be determined after class begins). We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents. Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is only five hours of driving.
Two mandatory enrollment meetings will be held in May. Parents and students must attend one of the two meetings. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, May 10th at 6:00pm in the Maize South High School Commons Area. The second meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 11th at 6:00pm in the Maize High School Commons Area. Eye tests will be given at both of these meetings and DMV paperwork will be filled out. Students will need to bring any type of license or permit they might already have. The cost of summer driver education is $200 with payment due in full on the date of the meetings. No registrations or late payments will be accepted after the last parent meeting on Wednesday, May 11th.
Students and parents with questions are encouraged to contact Curtis Klein at 316-462-8014 or by email at cklein@usd266.com or Steve Martling at 316-462-8000 or by email at smartling@usd266.com.

Dear Parents,
Planning is under way for the Maize High After Prom party which will take place April 9, 2016. For the past 28 years, we have held the After Prom party, which is a drug and alcohol free activity, to reduce the chance of students becoming involved in substance-abuse related accidents. Students are able to play games, eat food, and win prizes while being supervised throughout the night. After Prom, a non-profit event is completely supported by donations from dedicated parents, individuals, organizations, and local businesses.
There are lots of ways you can lend your support:
- Cash donations: Money goes to rent rides & games, purchase prizes, food, etc. $5, 10 or 20 can make a big difference! Monetary donations can be mailed to Maize After Prom, 11600 W 45th St N, Maize, KS 67101. Please indicate MHS in the memo of your check. All donations are tax deductible.
- Prize donations: We can use anything that would make a great prize! Do you own a business or work for one that can help? Past prize donations have been gift cards, t-shirts and hoodies, T.V.s, laptops, cameras, headphones, flash drives, camping equipment, gift certificates, key chains, cups, water bottles, board games and much more. Prize donations can be dropped off at Maize High School office to the attention of Teresa Claybrook or call 316-258-7341 to make arrangements for pick up.
- Volunteers are needed to make this event a success. We have several committees so there should be something for everyone! We have Bingo, Casino, Coat Check, Check-In, Games, Photo Booth, Raffle Prizes, Refreshments, and Weddings. We have a few committees that are in need of a chairperson: Casino, Games, and Weddings. Every year as seniors graduate, we lose great parent volunteers. You do not have to be a parent of a Junior or Senior to volunteer. If you would like more information, please contact Teresa Claybrook at 316-258-7341 or by email at jaster91@prodigy.net.
- We have created a Signup Genius to make signing up easier; please click HERE.
- We have a planning meeting on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 6:30 pm at Panera in New Market Square. Please come with ideas, suggestions or just to find out more information.
- We are looking for someone to take over next year as this is Teresa's last year. Please contact her if you are interested or have questions.
Thank you for your support!

The Maize High Friendship Club was presented with a wonderful "thank you" from Kansas Honor Flights. Students created posters for Kansas Honor Flights two years ago, and they continue to be used in sending off and welcoming home our veterans traveling to the nation's capital. Included in the photo below are Adrian Petty 12), MHS alum Chris Leon, and teacher Thea Lippoldt.

MHS Health Matters
Nurse Dana Desjardins |
Health Matters,
By Dana Desjardins, RN
Participating in Physical Education
The Maize High School Nurse's Office frequently receives requests from students to excuse them from participating in Physical Education classes. As a reminder, the Nurse's Office does not excuse students from participating in these classes. If a student does not feel like they can participate, they should speak to their PE or Weights teacher. If parents do not feel their student can participate in these classes, they may email or contact their child's PE or Weights teacher prior to them attending class.
The Nurse's Office is always open for students that become ill or are injured while participating in all classes. We appreciate parents' and students' help with this matter!
If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse at 350-2123 or email Dana Desjardins. We are here to help!

MHS SADD Sells Flowers
by: Elizabeth Bell
In October, the MHS SADD group sold flowers to students and staff to mark Above the Influence Day and Red Ribbon Week. Students and staff at Maize High School purchased red tulips, white speckled tulips, and red daylilies during EnCor and lunch periods. Over 50 people planted the flowers they bought for someone who inspires them, someone they knew who overcame drugs and alcohol, for those who dedicated their lives to living above the influence and drug free, or for someone they knew who was going through a difficult time. Everyone who purchased a flower was able to plant it around the metal eagle statue shown in the picture below during EnCor on October 27, 2015. This spring, the flowers will bloom and this will be an ongoing dedication to the students, staff, others, and SADD.
SADD will celebrate Shine Week from February 4-8th. Club members will be decorating the MHS Commons, wearing light-up bracelets, and posting positive messages throughout the school.

Shop at Target for Maize High!
|
With every Target RedCard debit and credit card that we use at Target, our school gets 1% of that total! This past August, we received a check for over $1,000, but we can grow this easily. Here's how to get signed up and have your card linked to our school so we can get the proceeds:
-
Stop into the Target on 21st and Maize and ask any cashier about signing up for a RedCard. There is a debit option that links with your current checking account, so be sure to bring a blank check and driver's license. There is also a credit option if that is your preference! (You can also sign up online at www.target.com)
-
Once you receive your card and activate it, go to www.target.com and at the bottom of the page it will read "Manage my RedCard." You will make an account login and then follow the prompts to link the card to our school.
-
Shop!! Remember that 1% of all we spend at Target comes right back to the school! The $1,000 we received was all part to 50 individuals' shopping totals. Imagine what we could earn with 500 patrons!
-
If you have problems linking your RedCard to our school, Patrick Wolz is our contact at Target. He is the Assistant Store Manager, and can help if needed. His email is Patrick.wolz@target.com.
