MHS Parent Newsletter

November 2015                                                Volume  123  Issue  4

 Botts' Babbles
It was an exciting week in Kansas education this week at the annual KSDE conference in Wichita as the new Commissioner of Education, Dr. Randy Watson, unveiled the new vision for Kansas schools with the slogan, "Kansas Leads the World in the Success of Every Student." This vision will continue to promote preparing students to be college and career ready; however, there will be an additional emphasis placed on soft skills. These soft skills include traits such as conscientiousness, collaboration, persistence, communication, and work ethic. This vision was drafted out of an accumulation of community conversations held throughout the state where 81% of education stakeholders said that non-academic skills (soft skills) are more important than academic ones.
In the April 2014 MHS newsletter, I spoke of acceptance as the character trait that I felt best described the culture at Maize High School. Today, I still feel this is what our school represents and is one soft skill that I believe the majority of our students already personify. Although this is an area in which our school thrives, we are not yet 100%. In the September 2015 issue of Play Newsmagazine, there was an article depicting various opinions offered about the Confederate Army battle flag that is often associated with racial hatred and what it means to students and staff at MHS. While this topic is widespread throughout most high schools in our country, it is the stance of the Maize High School administration that this type of display, and others that are racially divisive, are not appropriate in our school setting. We will work to ensure that all students who attend MHS can do so in a manner that ensures safety, quality of life, and respect and equality of all parents and students. For those who have been negatively impacted, I sincerely apologize and encourage you to reach out to me with your concerns so that we can problem solve on how to best remedy the situation. While I do not wish for anyone to be told they may not honor their heritage, it needs to be in a way that does not dishonor mine, or anyone else.
Our teachers and administration continue to work with architects in determining the details of how to best meet the needs of our students through the recent bond passage. Work is currently being done in the Maize High School gymnasium to install new bleacher tops. The bond will also allow for work to be done in creating FEMA spaces at MHS, a new career and technical education wing, and upgrades to our athletic facilities. It is exciting to see the progress being made on paper and I can't wait for them to become a reality.
Other news at Maize High school:
  • The results are in from the senior ACT testing date. The average composite score for the senior class was 22.14. The state average for the cohort class of 2015 was 21.9. Great job to our students!
  • As a friendly reminder, we ask that when a student is absent from school, a parent call the Attendance Office at (316)722-0441 (option 1) within 48 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Without parental contact, the absence is considered unverified which results in a student receiving a four-hour detention.
  • We are pleased to announce that we have math tutoring opportunities available for students at no cost. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students can receive help in all math areas from 3:00-4:00 in room H16. On Wednesdays, students can receive help in Algebra I and Geometry from 2:15-3:15 in H16. The tutoring will be provided by MHS teachers.
  • At the national FFA convention in Louisville, Kentucky, sophomore Brandon Carp finished in the top 16 as Kansas' representative in Creed Speaking and received a silver medal. Congratulations Brandon!
  • I would like to recognize all of our cheerleaders and Coach Lori Clinton on doing an outstanding job this year. The team recently spent their time promoting the MHS vs. MSHS Chick-fil-A challenge and did an awesome job decorating the store with Eagle Pride and representing our school with class. Well done!
  • Congratulations to the girls' volleyball team on earning a spot at the 5A state tournament on October 30th and 31st. The Eagles defeated Ark City and Bishop Carroll in sub-state on Saturday, October 24th to punch their ticket. Pep buses have been secured for students to travel on and support the team with their Eagle Pride!
  • The girls and boys cross country teams continue to have an excellent season. The boys finished in second place at the AVCTL league meeting and the girls took first. Both teams finished in third place at their regional with medalists Carson Pierce, Nicole Vick, and Kael Ecord leading the way. The runners will compete at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence at the state meet on Saturday, October 31st.
  • The boys' soccer team was the AVCTL Division 1 league champion and will be the number two seed headed into post-season play. Good luck to the team!
  • The Maize High School football team will finish the 2015 season on tonight against district-rival Maize South. We will also celebrate our Fall Senior athletes at 6:45pm this evening. We appreciate the efforts brought forth by the team this year.
  • Congratulations to MHS girls' track coach Dana Handy on being named the 2015 6A KCCTFCA (Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association) Coach of the Year.
  • Congratulations to Brett Moon (12) on being recognized as a Wendy's High School Heisman School Winner. Moon was the class 6A state champion at 160 pounds in wrestling during the 2014-2015 school with an undefeated record.
  • Congratulations to Matthew Freese who was recognized as the Maize High School Student of the Month for September. MHS physics teacher Stan Bergkamp said this about Matt: "Matt is the epitome of Eagle Pride. He has volunteered countless hours to get the new aquarium working in the science hall. He is also respectful, enthusiastic, and has a fantastic personality that naturally makes people feel comfortable when they are in his presence." Kathleen Thomas, science teacher, added, "I choose him because he has done a lot of work with the aquarium at the end of the G-Hall. That project isn't for a grade or a class and he is doing it on his own. He is doing a great job improving the science hall and our school." Congratulations Matthew!
  • For October, we congratulate Tiffani Holman as the Student of the Month. Maize High School tennis coach John Anderson called Tiffani, "Cream of the crop." He added, "She is always positive, never complains, leads by example, accepts any challenge, has a kindred spirit, is accepting of others, encourages, cares, is devoted, and is unassuming." Jana Schantz, English teacher, explained that "She is not only a hard-working excellent student, but she's able to do this while also standing out on the tennis court (and keeping up with the assignments that she misses in class because of the meets). She also has a positive personality; nothing seems to keep her down." Congratulations Tiffani!
On behalf of the student and staff at Maize High School, thank you for your continued support of our school. We are fortunate to have such supportive parents and community members. If I can do anything to help improve your student's education and high school experience, please do not hesitate to contact me.
With Eagle pride,
Chris Botts
 Counselors' Corner
Greetings from the
Counseling Department at
Maize High School!

October has been exciting at Maize High! The halls were full of spirit during Homecoming Week and a parade was enjoyed by the MHS students and staff.   The staff has also been doing a lot of testing this month. This month we:
  • Chaperoned 180 students at the Futures Fair at Century II on October 6th. Students were able to talk to over 100 college representatives and learn about those schools.
  • Gave the PSAT or Pre-SAT and National Merit Qualifying exam to nearly 90 sophomores and juniors on October 14th.
  • Gave the ACT to our seniors on September 29th and received their scores on October 22nd. We were very pleased with the scores we received. Great job seniors!
  • Gave the ASVAB assessment to 40 students on October 27th.

Other happenings at MHS!
Several members of the Class of 2016 attended the KU Honors program at Eisenhower High School on September 28th; those students are pictured below. These students are in the top 10% of their graduating class and received a personalized dictionary from the University of Kansas. Next year, Maize High School will host the KU Honors program on Monday, September 26th.

Last year, Megan Anderson (12) was asked to initiate a community service project at MHS by collecting Christmas cards for men and women in the military. Beth Janssen, who taught art at MHS last year, helped Megan kick off this fabulous project. Mrs. Janssen had students create card designs, and once the winning design was selected, cards were printed for each student at Maize High. Cards were distributed to EnCor classes and students were asked to write a simple note to our troops.
A total of 920 cards were collected, delivered, and sent to our troops. Maize High School collected the most cards in the state and was 5th in the nation. Congratulations to Megan, Beth Janssen, and Maize High School students!

This year, Megan will continue her project with help from the Peer Helpers led by teachers Betsy Manning and Sherry Pfeifer. Congratulations to Megan!

ACT
Friday, November 6th is the last day to sign up for the December 12th ACT test.  If a student is college bound, we recommend that juniors take the ACT at least once their junior year and once again at the beginning of their senior year.  High-achieving sophomores may want to take it for practice.  Students can take the ACT as many times as they like.  If you would like your student to take the ACT, please register at www.actstudent.org.  Students will make an account with a user name and password.  They will need to know our school code which is 171-885 and the MHS Test Center Code is 213970.  If you have any questions, please contact your student's counselor.

MHS Health Matters

Health Matters,
By Dana Desjardins, RN
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline and Break the Cycle, one in three teens in the United States report being physically, emotionally, or verbally abused by a dating partner.  Repeated abuse not only causes physical harm, but it can lead to increase in school absences, depression, suicidal thoughts, and illegal drug dependency. Experts say some signs of teen dating abuse can include:
  • Constant texting or excessive phone calls
  • Insistence on getting serious very quickly
  • Acting very jealous or bossy
  • Pressure to do sexual acts
  • Threats to hurt their victim or themselves if a break -up is suggested
  • Blaming the victim for the abuse
If teens are in an abusive relationship, or know someone who is, they should find help. Here are resources for your teen:
  • 24/7 National Dating Abuse Helpline 1-866-331-9474
  • Text "loveis" to 22522
  • National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-SAFE
  • National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-HOPE
  • Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center - WASAC
We should teach teens how to recognize the signs of abusive relationships. Healthy relationships should be based on mutual respect, open communication, and appreciation for each other. Our teens should know help is out there for everyone and remember to look out for their friends!

If you have any questions, please contact your school nurse at 350-2123 or email Dana Desjardins. We are here to help!
News from the Classroom
Farm to table: Agriculture students grow it; culinary students cook it! Jay Super's new Horticulture class (Agriculture pathway) planted a new garden near the beginning of the school year. Students waited for the temperatures to start getting cooler to plant fall, cool-season crops such as lettuce, spinach, radishes, peas, and carrots.  During a fruits and vegetables unit in Culinary Arts (Restaurant and Event Management pathway), Cara Poole's students were able to taste the fruits of the Ag students' labor. Right outside of their classroom door, students harvested fresh lettuce, tomatoes, basil, and dill to make salads with homemade dressing. The culinary students compost any green waste and send it back to the Agriculture students to complete the food cycle!

Jenny Meirowsky's Pre-Calculus class recently enjoyed the nice fall weather by participating in a scavenger hunt activity that helped the students prepare for their mid-term exam. Pictured from left to right are: Chloe Willems, Kira Busker, Alexia Gonzalez, Mia Magby, and Taylor Doan.
After Prom 2016
Dear Maize High Parents,

It's time to begin planning for the 2016 MHS After-Prom Party! The MHS After-Prom Party has been held every year since 1988 in hopes of providing a fun, safe event for students to enjoy after their prom festivities have concluded.
The After-Prom committee is made up solely of MHS parent volunteers. Every year, we lose parents as their students graduate. This year, in order to put on this event, we are in search of awesome parents with new ideas to fill chair roles. There are several committees that are currently in need of a chairperson for the 2016 event. Below is a list of current chair positions. If you are interested in being a chairperson or co-chair, please let me know.
Attendance - Crystal Worm
Bingo - Debbie Evans
Casino -
Coat Check -
Games -
Prizes - Laura Farney
Refreshments -
Solicitation -
Wedding Photos -

This is my fifth and final year as head of the MHS After-Prom due to my youngest graduating in May. In order for After-Prom to continue, I am searching for a fellow parent or two to learn the ropes this year and to head the even in the year(s) to come. This position is not difficult or demanding, and only requires a couple of hours of work each month. If you would like more information, if you are interested, or know someone who would be an awesome addition to the team, please let me know ASAP! The 2016 planning is beginning and I would prefer to have the future head chair(s) be involved in the process to help with the transition. Again, the head or committee chair positions can be two people working together.
Thank you,
Teresa Claybrook

Shop at Target for Maize High!

With every Target RedCard debit and credit card that we use at Target, our school gets 1% of that total! This past August, we received a check for over $1,000, but we can grow this easily. Here's how to get signed up and have your card linked to our school so we can get the proceeds:

  1. Stop into the Target on 21st and Maize and ask any cashier about signing up for a RedCard. There is a debit option that links with your current checking account, so be sure to bring a blank check and driver's license. There is also a credit option if that is your preference! (You can also sign up online at www.target.com)

  2. Once you receive your card and activate it, go to www.target.com  and at the bottom of the page it will read "Manage my RedCard." You will make an account login and then follow the prompts to link the card to our school.

  3. Shop!! Remember that 1% of all we spend at Target comes right back to the school! The $1,000 we received was all part to 50 individuals' shopping totals. Imagine what we could earn with 500 patrons!

  4. If you have problems linking your RedCard to our school, Patrick Wolz is our contact at Target. He is the Assistant Store Manager, and can help if needed. His email is Patrick.wolz@target.com.
