MHS Parent Newsletter
May 2015 Volume 122 Issue 8
|
I have really struggled to write the final newsletter article for the 2014-2015 school year. How can I possibly thank all of the seniors for their leadership, scholastic achievements, and activity accomplishments in one newsletter? I finally came to the realization that I can't! However, I will have a better format to do so at graduation on Sunday, May 17th at 5:30 p.m. It has been a great school year and one that has seemingly gone by way too fast. With that notion in mind, it is a great reminder to us all- students, parents, and teachers- to cherish each day and to make each day matter.
-
I want to cordially invite our underclassmen parents to our 2nd annual Eaglepalooza, which will be an all-day event held on Thursday, May 21st. This is our last day of school and will be filled with many fun activities for students and will be a refreshing way to conclude the 2014-2015 school year. Additional information will be sent out soon.
-
Congratulations to Kaitlin Ayres for winning the state competition for criminal justice in the Skills USA. Ayres is now on to nationals this summer.

Please take a moment to log into Family Access and check your student's fee account. Graduation is May 17 and all fees must be paid prior to this date for your student to receive his or her diploma. It is also possible that a fee may be added the last day your student attends if your student fails to turn in any type of school property (book, uniform etc.).
To make a payment, you may do so online or send cash with your student; no personal checks will be accepted.
If bills are not paid prior to May 15, students will not receive their diploma at the graduation ceremony. Senior athletes will not receive their diplomas until their sports uniforms are checked in. Once all fees are paid/items turned in, students may pick up their diploma from the registrar.
If you have questions concerning any of these fees, you may contact Alysia Buckley at the MHS office - 316-722-0441.
Thank you!

As part of our character education program at Maize High, each student has been asked to join in displaying our "Character in Action." Grit, Community, Integrity, Responsibility, Optimism, and Respect are the positive characteristics our students have been studying. Now, it is time to put them in action!! The goal for MHS this year is 5,000 hours of volunteering in our community. Each student is being asked to complete 3-5 hours of community service during the remainder of the 2014-15 school year. The opportunity to display these traits in the community will benefit our community and our kids, today and tomorrow. |
Corporate Sponsor Appreciation

2015 SUMMER FACE-TO-FACE DRIVER EDUCATION CHANGES
|
As the end of the school year approaches and parents and students plan their summer, there are several new changes to the summer face-to-face driver education. Any student who turns 14 on or before May 18, 2015 and has or will graduate 8th grade by June 1st will be eligible to enroll in summer driver education. Students will attend two weeks of classes beginning on June 1st (Monday through Friday) and ending on June 12th. In previous years, class time has been from 8:00 am to 11:00 am; however, this year, in order to accommodate more students, we are moving class time to the afternoon from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. In the past, the driving portion of class consisted of 10 drives of one half hour apiece. This year, students will complete at least five, one hour driving sessions (schedule to be determined after class begins). This will hopefully free up a week of summer for many students. We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents. Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is only five hours of driving. Two mandatory enrollment meetings will be held in May. Parents and students must attend one of the two meetings. The first meeting will be on Thursday, May 7th at 6:00 pm in the Maize High School Main Gym. The second meeting will be held on Saturday, May 9th at 10:00 am in the Maize South High School Lecture Hall. Eye tests will be given at both of these meetings by our school nurse and DMV paperwork will be filled out (to fill out the DMV paperwork prior to the meeting please click HERE). Students will need to bring any type of license or permit they might already have. The cost of summer driver education is $200 with payment due in full before June 1st. Students and parents with questions are encouraged to contact Steve Martling at 316-462-8000 or by email at [email protected] or Curtis Klein at 316-462-8013 or by email at [email protected]. |
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education during the school year (Term 1; Term 2; Term 3; Term 4). The online driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful of the law, to learn basic driving skills, and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving. The instructors will provide critical experience to students, involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. More detailed information on Online Driver Education can be found on the high school website under the "Counselor's Corner" link.
2015-2016 Enrollment Nights:

MHS Classroom Highlights!
|
On March 1, 2015, five Maize High School students participated in the 2015 Moody's Mega Math Challenge (M3 Challenge). This is a national competition that requires the commitment of a 14-hour work day to solve a real world math problem and create a workable solution that is presented as a paper, or in this case, a letter. The competition requires application of a variety of skills on a short timeline. Students must use research skills to find information that supports their data and conclusions for the solution they are presenting.
Students from Maize were given certificates of participation, but the team's solution did not make it to the final round. Despite this, the team's commitment to mathematics and learning is noteworthy.
Students pictured are: Julio Banuelos, Hayden Thurman, Scott Hershberger, Sam Bayliff, and Nick Coon.
Essentials of Physical Science students attempted to clean up the BP Oil Spill of 2010, learning the complex chemical and biological processes involved in such a monumental task.

The MHS Art Department celebrated their extraordinary seniors with the annual Senior Art Show on April 24th. This class of seniors is very talented! One of the highlights of the art show is the presentation of the Joe Pfannenstiel Memorial Scholarship. Joe Pfannenstiel was a beloved art teacher at Maize High School for many years before his passing, and the show was started by his colleagues following his death eight years ago. This year's scholarship winner was Chloe Cloud! She will be attending McPherson College this fall, majoring in Fine Arts and Graphic Design.
Deidra Walker (12) created her 2014 prom dress.
It was submitted and accepted into the Kansas State University Department of Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design Showcase of Excellence Fashion Show. Her dress was on display at the annual ATID Symposium. This event serves as an opportunity for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to "express their creativity and highlight their work at a prestigious, annual event," as stated on the K-State website. Maize High graduate, now junior in the Apparel Design program, Brianda Gonzalez, encouraged Maize High students to submit projects for the showcase.
At the 2015 State Science Olympiad Competition on April 4th, the following MHS students were awarded honors:
-
Justin Koegeboehn and Briley Lewis - 3rd place - Forensics
-
Sam Bayliff and Jon Kohl - 2nd place - Geologic Mapping
-
Jack Carver and Jonah Rich - 2nd place - Write Stuff
Shelby Carpenter (12) spent part of the 2014-2015 school year as a representative of the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation. Shelby was nominated to represent the state of Kansas and attended ALA Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. from July 19 through July 26, 2014. In the state of Kansas, Shelby was one out of 350 students to attend Girls State from Maize High School and then was selected by her peers and counselors at Girls State to represent Kansas at Girls Nation. Only 100 students (two from each state) are selected to attend. During her time, Shelby was able to meet with U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, and they drafted a resolution on VA facility care. Carpenter also met the President of the United States. Congratulations to Shelby on this distinguished honor! We are all proud of the manner in which she represented both Maize High School and the state of Kansas.

News from the Reading Eagle
MHS will be out for the summer very soon! Students will enjoy their break lounging by the pool or, if they're lucky, working. However, there's another tradition inseparable from the season - summer reading. While some books are compulsory for certain classes at MHS, others might just make for good beach reading. Either way, reading over summer break can help prevent knowledge loss before the next school year and improve vocabulary. Encourage your child to put down his phone and to pick up a book this summer!
Use books to take a vacation from your vacation. If your family is traveling this summer, encourage your child to bring along a book, instead of a game or a video. If you are taking a long journey in the car, read the same book as your child, and use the time in the car for a book talk to discuss the reading on the road. Traveling isn't always easy - airport waits, language barriers, and different schedules can leave you homesick. A book is a way to feel closer to home.
"One benefit of summer is that each day we had more light to read by." - Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle

From the MHS Registrar's Office
|
If you are moving over the summer and will not be attending MHS next school year, please let the registrar, Kristi Olinger, know of your plans. You may email her at [email protected] or call 316-350-2121.
Seniors: Please remember to request your final transcript from Parchment.com after you graduate. If you are attending a school that requires your transcript for admittance, you will need to request a final transcript in order for the college/university to have your official graduation date. If you have any questions, please contact Kristi Olinger at 316-350-2121.

Shop at Target for Maize High!
|
With every Target RedCard debit and credit card that we use at Target, our school gets 1% of that total! This past August, we received a check for over $1,000, but we can grow this easily. Here's how to get signed up and have your card linked to our school so we can get the proceeds:
-
Stop into the Target on 21st and Maize and ask any cashier about signing up for a RedCard. There is a debit option that links with your current checking account, so be sure to bring a blank check and driver's license. There is also a credit option if that is your preference! (You can also sign up online at www.target.com)
-
Once you receive your card and activate it, go to www.target.com and at the bottom of the page it will read "Manage my RedCard." You will make an account login and then follow the prompts to link the card to our school.
-
Shop!! Remember that 1% of all we spend at Target comes right back to the school! The $1,000 we received was all part to 50 individuals' shopping totals. Imagine what we could earn with 500 patrons!
-
If you have problems linking your RedCard to our school, Patrick Wolz is our contact at Target. He is the Assistant Store Manager, and can help if needed. His email is [email protected].
