Carrier SDN groups get closer as cellcos accelerate the move to software
By Caroline Gabriel, Research Director, Maravedis-Rethink
Two influential groups in the nascent carrier SDN (software defined networking) movement have joined forces. ETSI, the European standards body which is spearheading the NFV platform for telco network virtualization, has signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate with the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), which drives SDN solutions for service providers, based on the OpenFlow open specification.
The report will update Maravedis-Rethinks five-year forecasts for many aspects of RAN equipment including small cells, Carrier Wi-Fi, Cloud-RAN, and macro site equipment. It will also drill down into the changing balance of operators capex spend, including the investment in network software, and will examine opex and services investment plans. All forecasts are based on operator-by-operator surveys and modelling across the whole range of mobile broadband RAN technologies, hardware and software.

Raising a pile of cash from a massive sell-off can take a company in one of two directions, either financing consolidation and expansion, or being acquired itself. Vodafone became one of the biggest ever examples of this phenomenon after selling its stake in Verizon Wireless for $130bn, arming itself with oodles of cash but also in the process halving its market capitalization to around $100bn.
