In fixed/mobile alliances, wireline players are no longer the underdogs

There was a time when Vodafone was highly valued for being a mobile-only operator, unencumbered by legacy landlines. However, in recent years carriers have to be far more multi-faceted, as they turn from simple telcos to media and web giants too. That requires massive capacity, in access and backhaul networks and in the data center, and the best placed players will be those with a combination of infrastructure they can pool together, allocating resources where most relevant.

In the week of April 22, I had the opportunity to attend the 4GWorld India conference in Gurgaon, and taking part in the Analyst Dialogue session. The topic was 'Strategies for Monetizing 4G LTE in India', and that proved to reflect the key themes of the event, as Indian operators hover on the cusp of LTE, but with many challenges ahead.
