Final Physicians' Social for the Year Set for Oct. 4 in Duluth
Following in the footsteps of the successful Physicians' Socials in Minneapolis and Rochester, the MMA is hosting an event in Duluth on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Harbor View Room at Fitger's, 600 E. Superior St. The event is a celebration of medicine, a thank you to members, and a welcome to new and prospective members. Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served. New Fact Sheet Available on Helping Patients End Tobacco Use
ClearWay Minnesota has developed a new fact sheet with data from the Minnesota Adult Tobacco Survey on health care provider interventions in Minnesota. The purpose of the fact sheet is to provide information on what's currently happening when a tobacco user visits a health care provider and to outline ways providers, clinics, health systems and administrators can better help their patients quit. The fact sheet, Health Care Providers Can Help Minnesota Smokers Quit, is now available on the ClearWay Minnesota website.
Prepare Now for New Medicare Quality Payment Program
Although the new Medicare quality payment program created by the 2015 MACRA law doesn't take effect until 2019, physician practices are urged to prepare now. Performance on quality and other metrics in 2017 will serve as the basis for Medicare payments in 2019. Final program regulations and metrics will be released later this year and could involve new or different data collection requirements as early as Jan. 1, 2017. To help members understand the new Medicare changes, the MMA offers a comprehensive set of resources, including a no cost, in-person presentation to clinic leadership.

On April 21, superstar musician and Minnesota icon Prince died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl and the topic of prescription opioid misuse quickly rose to the top of the news cycle. Suddenly, patients seem more focused on the dangers of the painkillers than their benefits. Kim Tjaden, MD, the chair of the MMA's Public Health Committee and a family physician at St. Cloud Medical Group, discusses the issue and how the MMA will address it in the latest edition of Insights. Med Students and Residents: Share Your Research at 3rd Annual Poster Symposium
Want to get feedback from practicing physicians on your research? Submit an abstract to be considered for the MMA's 3rd Annual Poster Symposium at our Annual Conference on Sept. 23 in St. Louis Park. Poster entrants receive free admission to the event. To be eligible, you must be enrolled in and actively pursuing an approved course within Minnesota leading to the degree of doctor of medicine or osteopathy, or engaged in a resident or fellow program approved by the Liaison Committee on Graduate Medical Education.
