Board Approves Increased Attention to Opioids
On July 18, the MMA's Board of Trustees unanimously approved a list of recommendations related to the prescription opioid crisis including reconvening the MMA's Prescription Opioid Management Advisory Task Force. Read more here.

ICSI Seeks Comments on New Comprehensive Opioid and Pain Guide
The Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement is looking for comments on a new guide that combines its Assessment and Management of Chronic Pain guideline, and its Acute Pain Assessment and Opioid Prescribing Protocol. Comments are due Aug. 7 at 8 p.m. Read more here
Mayo Doc Continues as MMA Board Chair
On July 18, the MMA Board of Trustees re-elected Douglas Wood, MD, as its chair for another one-year term. Wood is medical director of Mayo Clinic's Center for Innovation. He is also a consultant on cardiovascular diseases and professor of medicine. Wood has been chair since 2014.

Each year, Minnesota Medicine holds a photography contest for physicians and physicians-in-training and publishes the winning entries in its July issue. This year, we received so many good submissions that we decided to create an online gallery to showcase them. The gallery will feature new images monthly. Health Dept Solicits Comments on Communicable Disease Rules
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is accepting comments on its proposed updates to the communicable disease reporting rules  through Aug. 22 at 4:30 p.m. Comments should be sent to Patricia Segal Freeman at PO Box 64975, St. Paul, MN 55164-00975; or faxed to 651-201-5501; or emailed to If MDH receives 25 or more written requests for an administrative hearing, one will be held Sept. 19 in St. Paul. Registration Open for 2016 MMA Annual Conference
