Prescription Monitoring Program Bill Moves in the HouseLegislators remain interested in finding solutions to the issue of prescription drug abuse, particularly opioid abuse. The House HHS Committee passed a bill to enhance the state's Prescription Monitoring program. The bill has been referred to Civil Law and Data Practices Committee. Read more here.

State Seeks Physician for Board of Medical Practice
The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State is looking for a physician to fill an open seat on the Board of Medical Practice. The board is responsible for licensing and registering medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy, physician assistants, traditional midwives, respiratory therapists, acupuncturists, athletic trainers and naturopaths; and enforcing the relevant practice acts. Members are paid $75 per diem plus expenses. The expected time commitment is one business day and one Saturday per month, plus preparation time. Applications are due April 26. Save the Date: National Expert to Address Payment ReformThe MMA will host a discussion on payment reform June 1 on the University of Minnesota, St. Paul campus, featuring Harold Miller, president and CEO of the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform. Miller works at the local, state and national levels on initiatives to improve the quality of health care services and to change the fundamental structure of health care payment systems in order to improve value. Miller is also an adjunct professor of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. Stay tuned to MMA News Now for more details.

Social Events Set for Metro and Rochester Physicians, Residents, StudentsThe MMA is excited to announce the dates and locations of two free networking events in Minneapolis and Rochester for physicians and physicians-in-training this spring. One will take place May 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Surly Brewery in Minneapolis. The second will take place June 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cambria Gallery in Rochester. These events are not only a celebration of medicine, but also a thank you to our members, and a welcome to new and prospective members. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided.
