Physicians Encouraged to Attend Intractable Pain, Medical Cannabis Meetings
The state's Office of Medical Cannabis is convening a series of community meetings through Oct. 27 to gather input on whether to add intractable pain as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis. The MMA encourages physicians to attend. Read more here

Minnesotans Named to Influential Healthcare List
Four Minnesotans are included on Modern Healthcare's 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare for 2015. They include Stephen Hemsley, president and CEO of UnitedHealth Group (ranked no. 5), John Noseworthy, MD, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic (no. 8), Omar Ishrak, chairman and CEO of Medtronic (No. 46) and Mary Brainerd, president and CEO of HealthPartners (No. 94). Technology Panelist Added at Annual Conference
Rebecca Hafner-Fogarty, MD, MBA, FAAFP, chief medical officer of Zipnosis, has been added to the "Emerging Technologies for Physicians" panel on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the MMA's 2015 Annual Conference. Hafner will discuss the migration of health care technology from hospital/physician-based to more patient-based, how it will affect medical practice, and how physicians can help to lead this change. CDC Webinar on Opioid Prescribing Scheduled for Sept. 16
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is hosting a webinar and discussion on draft opioid prescribing guidelines on Sept. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. CDT. The CDC is inviting providers, patients, and organization representatives to provide input. If interested, click here.  
MMA Looking for Candidates for MMIC Board
The MMA is searching for candidates to recommend for a board position on MMIC Insurance, Inc., the largest professional liability company insuring physicians and other health care organizations in Minnesota. A strong candidate will have current knowledge or a desire/capability to quickly learn about professional liability issues, demonstrated understanding regarding service on corporate boards and active involvement in organized medicine especially with the MMA. Duluth is Next Stop for Opioid Seminars
The MMA will host a free REMS (risk evaluation and mitigation strategy) seminar on opioids for physicians who prescribe extended-release and long-acting opioid medications. The event will take place Oct. 1 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Black Woods Banquet Center in Duluth. The seminar, which will be led by MMA member Charles Reznikoff, MD, an addiction medicine specialist, will feature food and a cash bar. This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
