MMA Submits Comments on Proposed Medical Cannabis Registry Rules
The MMA sent a letter to the health commissioner on Nov. 21 citing several concerns with the state's draft rules for its new medical cannabis registry. The state is currently gathering feedback from stakeholders on the proposed rules. The health department is expected to finalize the rules by early January 2015. Read more here. 
New Health Care Home Advisory Committee Seeks Members
Minnesota physicians have the opportunity to serve on the state's new Health Care Homes Advisory Committee. Specifically, the state is interested in five individuals: one health care professional who is either a primary care clinician, mental health provider, nurse or care coordinator; one representative from a certified health care home in Minnesota; one representative from a quality improvement organization in Minnesota; one consumer or patient who receives care in a certified health care home in Minnesota; and one employer in Minnesota. Medical Student Section to Elect Leaders Dec. 6
Students from the state's three medical schools will gather at the MMA offices in Minneapolis on Dec. 6 from noon to 2 p.m. to elect new leaders for the 2015 medical student section. Any medical student in Minnesota can attend the meeting, at which they can vote and run for office to represent their school and ultimately all Minnesota medical schools at MMA and AMA meetings. The Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) and Stratis Health are seeking physicians to help secure a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation grant that could help Minnesota practices thrive under new payment models. Read more here.

Attention Medical Students, Residents and Fellows

Minnesota Medicine plans to highlight the work of Minnesota medical trainees in its April 2015 issue. The journal will publish select abstracts of original research and clinical vignettes. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 23. Find out more online.

Former MMA Prez Urges Women to Get More Involved

The MMA's Immediate Past President Cindy Firkins Smith, M.D., urged about 70 female practicing physicians and physicians-in-training to get involved in medical advocacy during a social event hosted by University of Minnesota Women in Medicine and Minnesota Women Physicians on Nov. 25. Young Physician Patient Safety Award

Young physicians have the opportunity to win $5,000 plus a trip to Chicago by sharing a personal essay about a patient safety event that impacted their learning and growth. The Doctors Company Foundation is handing out six awards to third- and fourth-year students attending a medical school in the United States. They must have been enrolled by July 2, 2014. A 500 to 1,000-word essays is due by Feb. 2. Go online for more information. Awards will be presented at the Association of American Medical Colleges 2015 Integrating Quality Meeting in June in Chicago.
