MMA Defeats Bill That Would Increase Malpractice Damages

Dayton Signs Omnibus Health Care Legislation

Franken Co-Chairs Senate Rural Health Caucus

Sen. Al Franken (DFL-MN) recently took over as co-chair of the Senate Rural Health Caucus, a bi-partisan group with a long history of championing rural health care issues. One of his first acts as the new co-chair was to co-sponsor a bi-partisan bill on May 20 to help rural communities address the challenges they face providing quality health care. Read more here.

MMA and MMA Foundation Looking for Award Nominations

The MMA and the MMA Foundation are looking for nominees for its annual awards, which honor physicians and medical students in the state who have made outstanding contributions to their profession, their practice or the world around them. The deadline for nominations is June 30. Read more here.

Program to Explore Future of Health Care

Join experts in health care innovation as they explore new models of care, delivery reform and making health care data actionable at "Putting Policy into Action." The program, which is presented by 3M and Treo Solutions, is scheduled for June 3 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the St. Paul Hotel. Carolyn McClain, M.D., chair of MMA's quality committee, will join a panel discussing: "How do you measure effective person-centered care?" For more information, click here.

MMA Value Heading in Right Direction

Thanks to the more than 700 members, nonmembers, students, residents and fellows who responded to the recent MMA value/satisfaction survey. Each year we ask physicians to rate MMA's performance and to let us know how we can improve. While we are still analyzing the responses and the comments, the three most important ratings seem to be heading in the right direction. Member ratings for 'overall value,' 'satisfaction with MMA performance' and 'satisfaction with strategic direction' each increased for the second year in a row. Three Survey Participants Win Gift Certificate

MMA offered three $100 Visa gift cards as an incentive to complete the value/satisfaction survey. The three gift cards will be awarded to medical students at the University of Minnesota, the Mayo Medical Schools and a physician with Suburban Radiologic Consultants. Congratulations!

Fun and Games for Young MDs and Docs-in-Training

Residents, fellows and young physicians gathered at Pinstripes in Edina on May 17 for an afternoon of bowling, bocce ball and collegiality. Prescription Drug Prior Authorization Work Group to Form

The MMA is looking for physicians to serve on a new working group that will develop recommendations for reducing the burdens associated with prescription drug prior authorization. The group will convene this summer and complete its work by early 2015. Guidance on Minnesota's APCD Needed

Legislation recently signed into law by Gov. Mark Dayton calls for the formation of a work group that will develop recommendations for the 2015 Legislature on how Minnesota should best leverage its all-payer claims database. The MMA will recommend two individuals to serve on this group. Budding Filmmakers: Contest Launched to Promote Choosing Wisely

In an effort to help promote the Choosing Wisely campaign, the MMA is holding a video contest. Members are asked to submit videos (five minutes or shorter) by July 1. Participants must simply promote the Choosing Wisely campaign to a physician audience. Read more here.
