State Supreme Court Considers Two MMA-Backed Cases
On Feb. 3 and 4, the Minnesota Supreme Court heard two cases on the topics of end-of-life care and physician autonomy, both of which are vital to the MMA and its physician members.

SGR Deal Appears Imminent in Congress

As this issue goes to press, Congress appears to be on the verge of a bicameral, bipartisan deal to reform the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula. According to Modern Healthcare, "Sources say the agreement will include a 0.5 percent payment update for physicians for five years before transitioning to an alternative payment model structure." The deal is expected to cost about $126 billion over 10 years. There's no word on how it will be paid for, however. For background on the proposed deal, click here.

With the start of the 2014 legislative session just a few weeks away, the MMA has identified its top issues.

MMA Gathering Input on Prior Authorization for Meds

In its efforts to address the increasing administrative burden faced by Minnesota physicians, the MMA is seeking input from physicians and their clinic staff regarding the issue of attaining prior authorizations for medications.

MMA/ICSI Choosing Wisely Webinar Now Available

The MMA and the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) have teamed up to produce a 45-minute recorded webinar to help physicians learn how to incorporate the Choosing Wisely campaign into their practice. The webinar includes a series of videos to help physicians and their staff better engage patients in conversations that ensure appropriate tests are ordered. Mayo Doc Serves Men's Olympic Hockey Team

The Winter Olympics begin today in Sochi, Russia, with at least one MMA member in tow: Mayo Clinic's Michael Stuart, M.D., will serve as the team physician for the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team.

Free Opioid Webinar Set for Feb. 10

A free webinar that offers a new protocol for the care and treatment of patients in acute pain will take place Feb. 10 from noon to 1 p.m. The MMA has partnered with the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement to develop an evidence-based protocol for prescribing opioids for patients with acute pain.

Small Practices Invited to Take Part in EHR Study

Physicians working in medical practices of one to four physicians can participate in a study looking at the impact of electronic health records on small medical groups in terms of cost and patient care. The online survey is anonymous. If you are interested in participating, you can email the researcher or learn more about the study online.

MMA Provides Food and Recreation Picks for Visitors

The MMA has launched a webpage designed to provide members with recommendations on where to eat and recreate while in the Twin Cities. The initial recommendations are from MMA staff and our president but we are encouraging all members to provide recommendations for other destinations in Minnesota.
