Although the legislative session doesn't start for another month, work is well underway on potential legislation dealing with e-cigarettes and second-hand smoke.

Despite Warnings, Teens Still Tanning Indoors

A survey released Jan. 14 by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) shows that a large percentage of Minnesota high school girls are still tanning indoors. The MDH survey found that 34 percent of 11th grade white females reported they had tanned indoors in the last year, and more than half of them tanned indoors 10 or more times.

Lawsuit Agreement Leads to Destruction of Blood Spots

The Minnesota Department of Health reached a settlement Jan. 13 regarding the storage of blood spots as part of its Newborn Screening Program and as a result began destroying approximately 1 million blood spots.

Town Turns Out to Honor Country Doc of the Year

Around 250 people including residents of Starbuck, lawmakers and media members turned out Jan. 9 for a reception to honor Robert Bosl, M.D., as he received the "2013 Country Doctor of the Year" at the Starbuck Community Center.

MMA Board Chair to Take Part in Opioid Webinar

A free webinar that offers a new protocol for the care and treatment of patients in acute pain will take place Feb. 10 from noon to 1 p.m. MMA has partnered with the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement to develop an evidence-based acute pain assessment opioid prescribing protocol.

Duluth Panel to Discuss Health Care Reform

The Lake Superior Chapter of the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians and the Lake Superior Medical Society will host a panel discussion on "Health Care Reform: Implications for Minnesota and Beyond" on Feb. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine - Duluth Campus.

TCMS Names Officers, Award Winner at Annual Meeting

At its Jan. 14 Annual Meeting in St. Paul, the Twin Cities Medical Society inaugurated its 2014 officers including its new president Lisa Mattson, M.D. TCMS also presented its "First a Physician" award to Sanne Magnan, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement .

New Psychiatric Search Engine Launched

The Minnesota Mental Health Community Foundation has launched a new search tool online called Fast-Tracker designed to connect mental health providers, care coordinators and consumers with a real-time, searchable directory of mental health resources and their availability in Minnesota.

Choosing Wisely Webinar Available Online

A free 60-minute webinar on the Choosing Wisely campaign is now available on the MMA website. The program, with CME available, provides background on the initiative and includes videos that help educate Minnesota physicians on how they can decrease harm and improve outcomes by reducing unnecessary tests and procedures.
