Executive Committee Continues Discussions on Governance

At its Oct. 7 meeting, the MMA's executive committee voted on several follow-up items to the recent Annual Meeting in which the House of Delegates voted to suspend its activity until 2016.

MMA member Dionne Hart, M.D., defended the profession in a column in the Chicago Tribune on Oct. 9 regarding a former mentor who is no longer recommending medical school to his students because of the costs associated with becoming a doctor and malpractice insurance, and administrative burdens.

Oct. 15 Medicare Deadline Key for Avoiding 2015 Penalties

Physicians have until Oct. 15 to make decisions regarding Medicare's physician quality reporting system (PQRS) or possibly face a 1.5 percent cut on their 2015 Medicare payments.

Members Asked to Send Legislators Action Alert on SGR

The MMA sent out an Action Alert on Oct. 8 to members urging them to contact their U.S. representative and senators about repealing the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate formula. "This is the closest we have been to repealing Medicare's failed funding formula known as SGR in years. Please help us keep up the momentum by sending an Action Alert to your legislator today," urged the plea from the MMA's legislative team.

Students Invited to GME Funding Lunch & Learn

The Twin Cities Medical Society (TCMS) and MMA will host a free lunch and learn on "Cuts to Your Graduate Medical Education: What every medical student needs to know" on Oct. 29 from 12:10 to 1 p.m. at Moos Tower, Room 2-690, at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. Speakers include Troy Taubenheim, director of Metro Minnesota Council on Graduate Medical Education, and Leah Anderson, second year medical student and member of the TCMS legislative and policy committee. Report Released on Umbilical Clamping

A report comparing patient outcomes with early umbilical cord clamping and later clamping suggests that the latter improves the infant's hemoglobin, up to six months following birth. No other differences were seen between the two approaches.
