When the legislative session began in January, Minnesota ranked 28th in terms of how much it taxed tobacco. The state will soon rank sixth. That's because the Legislature approved raising the tobacco tax by $1.60 per pack of cigarettes as part of its $2 billion tax package. The increase goes into effect July 1.

With just days left in the session, lawmakers passed an $11.3 billion Health and Human Services budget that increased physician payments in the fee-for-service portion of Medical Assistance, reinstated medical education funding to a pre-2011 level and funded the Statewide Health Improvement Program.
