Conference Committees to Hammer Out HHS Budget, Tax Bills

With just a few weeks left in the session, the House and Senate are in the final stretch concerning budgets and taxes pertaining to Health and Human Services.

Members Asked to Support Newborn Screening

The MMA, along with the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, is asking physicians across Minnesota to support the Senate's position on the state's newborn screening program included in the omnibus data practices bill.

MMA Member Selected to MNsure Board

Kathryn Duevel, M.D., an MMA member, is among the six people named to the MNsure board of directors, Gov. Mark Dayton announced on April 30. They will join Lucinda Jesson, commissioner of the Department of Human Services, on the board.

Prescription Opioid Forums Kick Off Tonight

The first of three policy forums on prescription opioid abuse, addiction and diversion takes place tonight (May 2) at the Ramada Plaza Minneapolis. The forums continue May 9 in Rochester at The Kahler Grand Hotel and May 16 at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Duluth. Carol Falkowski, the former director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division, and Drug Abuse Strategy Officer of the Minnesota Department of Human Services, will begin the discussion.

MMA Launches New Blog Called Digital Rounds

The MMA launched a new blog called Digital Rounds on April 26 with a post from MMA CEO Robert Meiches, M.D. The blog will cover a range of issues affecting physicians in Minnesota. Member feedback is strongly encouraged.

Health Department Requests Comments on Immunization Law

The Minnesota Department of Health is requesting comments from interested parties on its proposed updates to the School and Child Care Immunization Law through the end of this month.

Rural Health Award Nominations Due May 10

Physicians are asked to nominate those who have made a positive difference in rural health for the 2013 Minnesota Rural Health Awards. Nominees can be individuals or teams. The awards will be presented during the Minnesota Rural Health Conference in June.

MMA Board Chair Wins U of M Award

MMA Board Chair Dave Thorson, M.D., recently received the Exceptional Community Faculty Teaching Award at the University of Minnesota Medical School and U of M Foundation 2013 Honors and Awards program. Thorson is a graduate of the U of M Medical School.

Congratulations to the Class of 2013

The University of Minnesota Medical School's 2013 Commencement Ceremony will be held May 3 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. Tickets are not required for the ceremony; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Mayo Medical School Graduation will be held May 18 at Mayo Civic Center.

Financial planning for Residents and Fellows

A free, two-hour seminar, "Financial Planning and Debt Strategies for Young Physicians," will be offered on May 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the MMA offices, 1300 Godward St. N.E., Minneapolis. The seminar will help young physicians understand how to rein in student loan debt and begin a disciplined financial planning program. Spouses/guests are welcome and a light dinner will offered.
