Election Brings Big Changes at State Capitol

After winning virtually every competitive state legislative seat, the DFL has regained the majority at the State Capitol. For the first time since 1990, DFLers control both legislative bodies and the Governor's office.

MMA Member Becomes Mayor of Albany, Minn.

Daron Gersch, M.D., has been elected mayor of Albany, Minn. He will serve a two-year term beginning Jan. 1.

ACA Provision Increases Medicaid Rates for Primary Care Services in 2013-2014
In a final rule published Nov. 6, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced state requirements for increasing Medicaid rates for specified services provided by primary care physicians, for services delivered Jan. 1, 2013, through Dec. 31, 2014.

Positions Available for Physicians on Health Care Boards

Several new vacancies on state boards and agencies are currently open for physicians. The MMA provides a brief description of each with a link to application information.

Component Medical Society Updates:
  • Patrick Zook, M.D. (right), took over as president of the Stearns Benton Medical Society at the group's annual meeting on Nov. 7. He replaces Christopher Wenner, M.D.
  • The Lake Superior Medical Society will host its annual Legislative Dinner on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Tycoon's Alehouse & Eatery in Duluth. Cost is $25. For more information contact Heather Opsahl, executive director at 218-727-3325.
  • The Lake Superior Medical Society is looking for volunteer physicians to help with its "Examine the Field of Medicine" event taking place Nov. 13 at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Medical School campus from 6 to 8 p.m. The free event is intended to encourage high school students to pursue a career in medicine.   • The Range Medical Society will host a Legislative Outreach Meeting on Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Timberlake Lodge in Grand Rapids. Cost is $20. For more information, call 218-263-3470.

MMA Urges Minnesotans to Get Flu Shot

In a press release sent out to statewide media outlets on Nov. 7, the MMA urges all Minnesotans, ages six months and up, to get a flu shot.

Minnesota Medicine Wins Four Magazine Awards

Minnesota Medicine, the journal of the Minnesota Medical Association, earned four 2012 Publishing Excellence Awards from the Minnesota Magazine and Publishing Association on Nov. 1.
