Observations from the Sandestin Triathlon - August 23, 2014
With a full heat advisory in effect along the Emerald Coast and temperatures soaring into the low to mid 90s, the 28th Annual Sandestin Triathlon provided a challenging test for over 600 athletes. Team MPI was well represented at the race and on the podium as evidenced by the number of age group medalists. On the eve of the race and while manning the Team MPI booth at packet pickup, many of the participants wanted to know about the bike course construction zone and how that would impact the race. And, for those athletes who had traveled from more inland locations, the questions centered on water conditions/marine pests in the Gulf. Fortunately, race organizers were well prepared to handle contingencies for the construction zone (thanks in part to reconnaissance from Team MPI coaches) and Coach John passed on several tips for the swim course. Race day started with pre-dawn temps in the upper 80's. Did I mention it was hot? After a quick warm up swim with the dolphins who were kind enough to make a pre-race appearance, the race day activities began on the beach with the invocation and singing of the National Anthem. Swim conditions could not have been more perfect in the clear and calm waters of the Gulf. Then it was on to the bike and a ride out to scenic/iconic 30A and back. On the run, the heat index was well north of 100 degrees, so the extra water station was a welcome addition. Did I mention that it was really, really hot? Reflecting on the race weekend, I would like offer three items for consideration at hot races such as this: - Control what you can control: We can't control the weather, surf conditions, road conditions, etc. But, we can control how we prepare for those elements. Obviously, in hot weather, proper hydration is crucial and we're all aware of that when we train. But, on race day morning, with all the other demands of getting to the start line, we can easily overlook our hydration needs. Have an extra water bottle on hand as you set up your transition area and be sure to take in plenty of fluids before heading to the swim start.
- Keep some perspective: We do this because we love our sport. Most rational adults would agree that risking life and limb over a $2 award medal seems silly, but during Saturday's race, I witnessed a few close calls as more than one athlete exercised questionable judgment racing to the bike finish in a highly congested area. Few things ruin an otherwise perfect race day more than a trip to the ER.
- Plans are made to be adjusted: In my work as a project manager, I'm often required to develop highly complex project plans. It always amazes me how many changes are required to the original plan as the project progresses and new variables are introduced or additional knowledge is gained. My point here is to constantly evaluate your plan and how effectively it is leading you to your goals and how might it may need to be refined going forward.
I hope you are able to apply a few of the above principles in your next race. As always, the folks at Sandestin put on a first class event and Saturday's 28th edition of the Triathlon was no exception. Great job on a great event to Adam, Jason and Mollee. I recently listened to an interview with an elite age group triathlete who came into the sport just looking to lose weight and get fit after having a baby. When her coach of almost four years decided to get out of the sport, she began training with a new coach and stuck it out with him for close to a year even though she new they did not mesh well together. She ultimately ended up miserable, unmotivated, and not enjoying the sport at all.
She has since moved on and is doing much better, but one thing she mentioned that struck me was that you shouldn't be putting into the sport what you are not willing to give up. In other words, is the time that you are putting into training bringing you the same happiness and enjoyment that other things that you could fill that time with would bring you? It is a focus on the process rather than the outcome.
For the majority of us, we are not out there making money in triathlon, we are in it for the challenge and fun of it. However, if you are not experiencing that enjoyment, take a step back and reevaluate. If you can focus on the process and enjoying the journey leading up to your races, then it takes the pressure off come race day. Of course you will still have goals that you would like to accomplish in your races, but in cases where you have a bad day and don't meet those, you won't be devastated, rushing home, and listing your bike on eBay. And on those days when you do meet the goals that you set out, that will just be the "cherry on top."
All of us came into this sport looking for something fun to do, but some of us have gotten distracted and started taking triathlon and ourselves a little too seriously. I challenge you to go out and have some fun this week. Ride a new route, meet up with a new group, or sign up for a race with a friend, whatever you do, just go out and enjoy the sport.
