The Flawed Interview Process
 | | Pappas |
by Tim Pappas, Co-founder of Pappas-DeLaney and Manufacturing Matters! Presenter
The Harvard Business Review recently quoted former AlliedSignal's CEO Larry Bossidy as saying that hiring is "the most flawed process in American business."
That's not surprising, even in the face of all the priorities for training. Senior executives report that much less time is invested in interviewing training than any other type of training. In most MBA courses, interviewing is only lightly touched upon even though it's consistently reported as an area where executives are least competent. Organizationally, the theory appears to be that anyone having been through an interview must know how to conduct one. My observation is that many senior executives take about 5 minutes trying to make a hiring decision, and 55 minutes justifying that decision. Few had questions prepared or knew how to ask them; fewer knew what answers to expect.

The companies, Quality Packaging Incorporated (QPI) in Fond du Lac, and Gordon Aluminum in Schofield demonstrate how sustainable principles and increasing market pressure for more sustainable products are contributing to broader acceptance and implementation of sustainable practices.

We're ALL in Manufacturing
 | | Vetta |
by Dave Vetta, president & CEO, First Business Bank
Given that approximately 30% of Wisconsin's jobs are related to manufacturing, we all have a vested interest in - and responsibility to do what we can - to support and drive the growth of manufacturing. If you're not already in the camp that agrees we have a skills gap today, you'll certainly agree one is imminent. The demographics and skillsets of manufacturing jobs are changing, and a recent survey shows this to be true in other sectors as well. We need to align public and private resources to get ahead and stay ahead.
