Forum tackles manufacturing skills shortage

For years now, manufacturers have struggled to fill open jobs due to a lack of qualified candidates. The problem continued to persist during the protracted recession even in the face of high unemployment levels, frustrating employers even more and creating missed opportunities for growth in the industrial sector.
What challenges has the skills shortage caused and what is being done to address the issue?
I recently served as a panelist for a forum on the topic organized by WUWM, the hard-working public radio station in Milwaukee. As a reporter - first for a business newspaper in Milwaukee and now as a staff member at the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership - I have covered manufacturing for more than a decade and have witnessed first-hand the challenges facing manufacturers as they often have struggled to grow their businesses, especially while the economy has worked to pull itself out of the depths of the downturn. Manufacturers Endorsed Education Alliance
The Manufacturing Institute has announced the launch of the Manufacturers Endorsed Education Alliance. As manufacturers and students are seeking the right standard of learning to meet the increasing skills demanded in manufacturing, this new program will recognize quality manufacturing education and training programs that are a preferred source of talent for manufacturing employers.
