An Amazing Grace International Update
February 2014

Tom's Kids
In 2005, Tom Tune went to Vietnam to help Partners In Progress build a medical mission boat.  While there, he noticed the number of children populating the streets every day. He learned that tuition for public school was about $12 a month. Since most people only earned $2 a day, sending a child to school for the poor was out of the question. Tom set about picking some children he had met to send to school himself. He told his friends and they contributed to the cause. The number of children increased and "Tom's Kids" was born. Soon afterward, Amazing Grace International, Inc., took over the collection and administration of the tuition (making contributions tax-deductible).

Tom met "Frenchy," a graduate of Sunset International Bible Institute, who was being supported in Saigon by the WestArk church of Christ in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and they began to work together to grow a congregation there. They invited the children to come to worship in Tom's hotel and the church began to grow. In 2009, Tom moved to Can Tho and started the same program there. It wasn't long before a new congregation was begun. Tom passed away February 5, 2013, but the work goes on. Much of this report is about that work.

You can be a part of this ministry. A $15 a month contribution will buy a uniform and pay for tuition and supplies to educate a child who would otherwise be left on the street to his own devices. You can make a difference.
Mike's Notes
Much has happened since our last newsletter, but perhaps the most important event is another baptism. On December 8, Dieu Huyn was baptized into Christ. She is shown here being baptized by Hai Huynh, preacher for the church of Christ in Can Tho. She has been worshiping with the  church since 2009 and has been a faithful member of the ladies' Bible class. She spent the night at the church building the previous Friday evening and she and Ngan (who directs our English school program there) had some quiet moments together to talk. Dieu told Ngan that her husband wanted her to be baptized.
Ngan asked her the more important question: "Do YOU want to be baptized. Dieu replied that she had wanted to be baptized for a very long time, but her husband would not allow it. Recently, however, he had spoken to her and told her that he had changed his mind; that he wanted her to become a Christian. Dieu's two daughters were baptized by Tom Tune in 2009. As is the custom of the church, there was a nice meal after the baptism to welcome Dieu into the family of God.

The church continues to grow. A recent high attendance was 72. Half of the members live on the river and in surrounding villages. It takes them at least an hour to get to assembly and they either walk or ride bicycles.

The English school is likewise continuing to grow with, at last report, 176 students. The school exists to serve the community and help young people who are encouraged to learn English in school -- but who have difficulty doing so and need further help. The students are very eager to learn. Vy Truong (pictured here)  is 14 and one of the students. She comes to class 30 minutes early and studies before class starts. Vy lives with her grandmother who makes a living for them both by washing dishes at a restaurant. The restaurant also provides a bed for them to sleep at night. Her mother lives in Cambodia and her father has disappeared. Her life is such an incredible example of so many children who are virtually having to make their own way. The Church has an important role to fill in guiding these young people, showing that Christians care, and helping to provide a moral and ethical direction for their lives. Fifteen separate English classes are held each week and at least one class meets every day of the week. Each time, students make their way to the church property which exposes them to the fact that these buildings are special and provided by Christians. The classes last 90 minutes and have between 15 and 25 students per class.
Among the students is Vinh Ho, pictured here (to the right) with Ngan Huyn. He is 10 years old. His mother stays at home and takes care of the children. His father is a bricklayer. During the regular weekly visitation, Vinh's mother said that Vinh loves to come to English school. Often, the area where their house is situated floods and when it does, it is difficult to get out. In fact, on that day, water was making its way into their house. Vinh had cried because it meant he could not walk to school and he had asked his father if he would carry him on his shoulders. Since Vinh lives near the church building, he is able to come to church every Sunday.

Like any project, it is important to measure results where you can. All of our English school students were given exams in October to test their improvement. Not one student failed. These exams were given before their regular school examinations so we could compare their scores. The result of the comparison was that 75% of our students made higher grades in public school than normal. It is without a doubt being effective in helping the children. Another way we can tell it is helping is that our student base is growing all the time.
Example
Reading one of Ngan's reports recently I was reminded that on the mission field, nearly everything you do serves as an example -- including the act of praying before a meal. Ngan writes the following:

Every Saturday, Hai [the preacher in Can Tho] and some of the English teachers go to visit church members, recent visitors and in the homes of Tom's Kids. This is what Tom did. He would get to know people, take them out to eat, visit in their homes and invite them to church. I remember when I first met Tom. My mother woke me and told me there was an American man and a Vietnamese man who had come to see us. It was Tom and his co-worker, Frenchy. We talked for about fifteen minutes and Tom asked questions while Frenchy translated. One night, he invited my mom, step-father, sister and me to go eat at a restaurant. Before we ate, Tom said a prayer. At that moment, I did not know what he was saying or why he had to do that. Later, I understood that every time we eat we should thank God for providing us the food. Though it is just a small action, it is a great way for non-believers to start thinking about God. I might add that it's not just on the foreign mission field that example is important.

Our community is likewise a mission field and example is important here as well! Pictured above are church members gathering for a meal on a Sunday afternoon.
Visitation
The following is a further report from Ngan regarding Tom's Kids:
Pictured here (left to right) are Tom's Kids: Khang Duong (2nd grade) and Khanh Duong (5th grade) They live on the river, an hour away from the church. The two brothers walk to school every morning around 6:00am before school starts at 6:45am. Their parents catch fish on the river and sell to the market. Their father is also a bricklayer. They live in a tent large enough for two beds. When I walked inside the house, I could see the sky through the roof. We brought them some cookies and sweet drinks. They were so happy and held the cookies in their hands all the time. They said it was their first time to eat cookies. These kids never get to eat anything else beside their basic meal (rice) everyday with their parents. Their parents said how much they
appreciated Amazing Grace for helping their kids to be able to go school. They said they realized that education is very
important because it would give their kids a better future. I have seen many children on the street fighting or stealing or working adult jobs because they do not get to go
to school. Just $15 a month can make all the difference in the future of a child and helping each of these children gives us an opportunity to teach them about Jesus.

End Notes
Our next newsletter will appear near the end of March. By the time most of you receive this one, it will already be February and at the end of that month, I will be going to Vietnam for a visit. I will spend a few days in Saigon, but most of the time will be spent in Can Tho. I would appreciate your prayers for that trip, and especially for the Church of our Lord in Vietnam. Our news isn't done here however. Continue reading the news of our Bible course work here in the United States. It is a pioneering program in that it is the only Bible course being offered every week in our mainstream national media. Please do take the time to read about what we are doing here in our own country.
Bible Course
For over two decades we have been offering a free home Bible study course by advertising in the newspaper USA TODAY. Our ad appears twice a week and below, you will find the numbers of our students for 2013. The course begins with an  overview of Christianity and why it is important. It continues with a walk through the story of both the Old and New Testaments, showing that though they are two testaments, they are but one story of God's redeeming love. Next come lessons on salvation and the Church, worship, and -- so very important -- a lesson on the expected lifestyle of the Christian.

There are eight lessons in all. Over 1200 new students enrolled in the program last year and we graded over 3000 lessons. Over 200 graduated from the course. If you would be interested in taking this course, you can order it free by calling 1-888-949-2176 or, you can take it online by going to www.amazinggraceinternational.com.

Here's something else you will find at Amazinggraceinternational.com: For the past three years I have been writing a devotional commentary on the whole Bible. Over 1000 chapters of the Bible have been covered and I have, as of this writing, only about 80 left. This year, I am writing those last eighty devotionals and indexing the entire presentation. The end result will be that you can select any chapter in the Bible and find a 300 word devotional built on the content of that chapter.
