ONE TEEN'S JOURNEY FROM DOUBT TO DETERMINATION

On May 1, 2014, the D.C. Council Committee on Health held hearings in order to review budget recommendations for the Department of Health (DOH). Three representatives from Healthy Babies Project testified. This is Vanessa's story as shared with the committee.

HBP staff and teen moms
HBP staff and teen moms

By Vanessa H.*

I am eighteen years old and have a beautiful one-year-old girl named Gerree. I am a program participant in the Healthy Babies Project's Teen Parent Empowerment Program (TPEP) and a resident of the HBP Perennial Transitional House.

I would like to share my experience with Healthy Babies Project (HBP), including how the home visitation aspect of the program helped me and impacted my life as a young mother. Let me begin by saying that HBP has become my second home.

I first came to HBP to take a pregnancy test. Upon finding out that I was pregnant, I was terrified. Every worry came to mind. All I kept thinking to myself was, "Vanessa, you're a failure." I worried that by becoming a teen mother I would never be good enough to do anything. Worse, I started to believe every doubt that crossed my mind ...(read the rest of the story ...

HBP IN THE COMMUNITY DURING APRIL

TPEP-ers Attend White House Easter Egg Roll

On Monday, April 21, 2014, TPEP families joined 30,000 guests on the White House South Lawn for the 136th Annual Easter Egg Roll. The event featured live music, sports courts, cooking stations,

storytelling, visits with the Easter Bunny, and of course - Easter egg rolling. In addition to all of the fun, the day's activities encouraged children and their parents to lead healthy, active lives in support of the First Lady's Let's Move! initiative.

Book Making With Howard University Volunteers

On April 19, Howard University Speech and Hearing graduate students joined TPEP teen parents, children, and community families with an early literacy workshop focused on the art of making books. Healthy Babies Project is grateful for its longstanding partnership with Howard University's Communications Department, whose speech-language pathology graduate students and staff provide regular training and workshop support for our teen moms.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Sisters Serve HBP Families

The Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a service organization for educated women of diverse backgrounds, provided child care, food preparation, and clean up at HBP's Perennial House in April. AKA works to improve social and economic conditions through community service programs. It was founded at Howard University in 1908.

Financial Literacy with Hoops for Youth

"Children are our greatest treasure." That quote from Nelson Mandela inspired TPEP-ers at the opening of a special financial literacy training generously provided by Hoops for Youth Foundation volunteers at Perennial House during April. Our teen parents discovered the direct connection between simple financial responsibility and in providing for their children. Special thanks to attorney and Hoops for Youth board member Brad Knox and SC state representative William Clyburn for leading the session.
