Engage: The Reality of Teen Suicide
September: National Suicide Prevention Month

We've all seen it: The melancholy teen pushed to the brink, left without hope or help, who decides to take their own life in Act Two of some soap opera or straight-to-TV-movie.

It's upsetting, it's dramatic and, unfortunately, it has transformed personal tragedy into a television cliché.

Engage: Understanding Suicide
Myth vs. Fact

Suicide is a serious public health problem that takes an enormous toll on families, friends, classmates, co-workers and communities, as well as on our military personnel and veterans. To understand why people die by suicide, and why so many others attempt to take their own lives, it is important to know the facts.

Tips

SAFETY
While sanitizers are promoted as effective against 99.9 percent of germs, some hazards are overlooked. According to Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a 2-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer contains 6 percent ethyl alcohol, which is equivalent to four shots of vodka. At this concentration, even small doses can be dangerous if ingested. Hand sanitizers also pose fire hazards, so be sure to watch your children around them.

BULLY
Teaching your children the implication of their actions is a tool they can use in building and maintaining healthy relationships throughout their lives. If you notice your child saying something negative to a friend or sibling, sit down with them and explain how their actions affect others. Help brainstorm ideas on how to reconcile with the ones they may have hurt.

LeAnn Hull Tells Her Story

On Dec. 11, 2012, my life changed forever. My family and I became unfortunate members of the worst club in the world: survivors of suicide.

It is a lonely, personal road that you must journey alone. That's not to say there isn't some degree of comfort from friends and family, but ultimately, you must process this event by yourself.
