PEER PRESSURE CAN LEAD TO LOWER SELF-ESTEEM, EMOTIONAL DAMAGE AND EARLY SUBSTANCE ABUSE
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - We all have it -- some sort of pressure in our lives -- pressure at home or work, pressure to succeed. Teens have many pressures as well, but peer pressure is one of their biggest stressors. The newest issue of MASK The Magazine, The Peer Pressure Issue: How to Teach Your Child to Listen to Their Own Voice, examines peer pressure, and gives strategies to help teens become pressure-proof.
"Peer pressure typically begins in middle school and lingers through high school," says Vivian Seltzer, MSW, Ph.D. "But it's also a transitional thing, affecting some kids at one age and others at different times in their lives."
So how can parents help? Parenting experts agree that listening to children, not talking at them, is key, as is teaching them how to problem solve so that they can handle a challenging situation on their own.
One surprising fact from the Fall issue: New teen drivers consistently take greater risks when their friends are watching. Something to consider when making the decision to allow your new driver to pack the car full of friends.
In the magazine's S.A.T. section, Thunderbird High School students give their revealing perspective on the various types of pressures they face.
From five reasons why your teen would benefit from learning a foreign language, to MASK's quarterly need-to-know tips on safety, drugs, technology, and bullying, this issue of MASK The Magazine is packed with helpful information, and provides tools and resources on how you can help your child resist peer pressure and manage the many other pressures they face.
