Engage: Communication Gap
Have you talked to your teen today?

Conversation and communication are what humans thrive on to grow and improve. After all of this time, though, there are still some kinks that need to be worked out.

The common issue with most conversations that turn into arguments is not knowing what we expect to get out of the conversation. This problem rings true among coworkers and peers, but also between parents and their teenagers. In most cases, both sides expect something different from the other, which can turn the conversation sour.

Engage: Body Piercing
TRENDING NOW // Potential Hazards of the latest trend

When it comes to the latest fashion trends, young people are quick to jump on the bandwagon. And while some trends come and go, others are here to stay.  The latest fashion trend to go mainstream is body piercings. Not simply earlobe piercings, mind you. Piercings are now being done all over the body, from tongue piercings to earlobe gauges to microdermal anchors, which are essentially body jewelry affixed to the surface of the skin held by an anchor implanted underneath the skin.

Tips

TECH
With the prevalence of social media, children are beginning to base their self-worth on the number of likes or followers they have on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. Monitor how much time your child spends on social media and teach them that quantity is not what matters.

DRUG
At parties, tasteless and odorless drugs are often hidden in beverages. If consumed, they can cause disorientation, making your child susceptible to any form of abuse, including rape and sexual assault. Instruct your child to never leave their drink unattended or accept opened bottles. They should either serve themselves or insist on watching anyone who is serving them.

How to build a stronger bond with teens

While the communication between parent and teen seems to be there, some young people feel as though they're just not being heard.

Teens feel that most conversations with their parents are more like lectures, which often lead to yelling matches.

Share memories and photos from your childhood so they have something to relate to. This back and-forth dialogue is not only healthier, it's rewarding and informative.
