Engage: Balancing Act

Twenty or 30 years ago, playing sports meant running around with the kids in the neighborhood and playing catch, shooting hoops or riding bikes. Usually the only restriction you had was getting home before the streetlights turned on.

Today, having hours of free, unstructured playtime is a rare treat. Instead, kids hop in the car after school and rush off to soccer practice, piano or tutoring. On weekends, young competitive athletes often board planes and travel thousands of miles away to play against kids they've never met.

"WASHINGTON -- A task force appointed by the White House will announce recommendations on Tuesday to combat sexual assault on college campuses.

Colleges and universities, including some prestigious Ivy League schools, have come under fire over the past year for their failure to effectively respond to sexual assault complaints.

President Barack Obama established the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault in January with the purpose of identifying the scope of the problem, strengthening federal enforcement efforts and providing schools with resources to effectively prevent and deal with sexual assault on their campuses."

TECH:
At school, at home or on the go, kids have smartphones within easy reach. Rather than telling them to put their phones away, make their screen time more productive by downloading the latest study aids. SwipeStudy, for example, is an app that students can use to create their own flashcards for such subjects as math, science, literature, history, geography and foreign languages.

Stress is a prevalent force found in everyday life that is often misunderstood. Upon receiving a strenuous assignment or task we, as individuals, are subject to the fight-or-flight response. This natural occurrence that is part of our physiological structure exists to help us channel our adrenaline and energy in critical moments. However, high or prolonged levels of stress can be overbearing on personal health in the short term, and detrimental in the long haul.
