Studies Show That People Who Start Drinking or Using Drugs Before Age 15 Are Roughly Four Times as Likely to Have an Addictive Disorder
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Most of us know there is a genetic component to addiction, but have you ever wondered when an addiction may take root? The newest issue of MASK The Magazine, The Addiction Issue: Signs + Behaviors That May be Interfering with Your Family, examines the contributing factors and warning signs that could lead to addictions.
The most well-known addictions involve alcohol and drugs but compulsive behaviors such as gambling, sex, food, exercise, work and internet use are gaining attention in the psychiatric community as they become more widespread.
"Addictions rarely happen suddenly," says Joseph Nowinski, Ph.D., clinical psychologist at the University of Connecticut. "Generally, they creep up on you." But how do you tell the difference between a bad habit or an addiction? Nowinski says you know you're on the road to addiction when a substance or behavior starts taking over your life and squeezes out time with family and friends.
Readers of the Spring issue will learn about a nonprofit organization called Teen Challenge of Arizona, a faith-based residential recovery program established in Phoenix in 1965. Teen Challenge has five residential centers in Arizona that help people of all ages find freedom from their addictions.
In the magazine's S.A.T (Student Awareness Tools) section, Pinnacle High School students uncover unconventional addictions some teens are facing.
Actress, motivational speaker, and author Suzanne Somers is featured in MASK's "Minute with Mom" section, where she recounts her own painful story of the devastating effects of alcoholism in her own family, and MASK's "Dad Dialed In," NFL sports legend Herschel Walker, reveals his struggle with dissociative identity disorder.
From five ways to prevent your child from becoming a victim of identity theft, to whether to consider "going organic," to MASK's need-to-know tips on safety, drugs, technology, and bullying, this issue of MASK The Magazine provides tools and resources on how to recognize behaviors that could lead to addiction. The Spring issue is currently available at maskmatters.org and at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, Arizona.
The award-winning MASK The Magazine tackles important subjects including bullying, current drug and alcohol trends, self-esteem, and technology safety. All topics are formatted in easy-to-read, age appropriate sections, from kindergarten to college.
