Self-Harm Awareness Month

At first glance, it may be difficult to distinguish between self-injury and attempted suicide. In both cases, a person may cut, burn or mutilate himself, causing severe physical pain and injury. However, a closer look reveals major differences in intentions.

Someone who engages in self-injury is looking for a psychological release or distraction from their intense pain and wants to feel better. In contrast, a person who attempts suicide is trying to kill himself.

Dangerous New Trend

"(CNN) -- It begins with a nomination, from one internet user to another, to drink. The idea is that you nominate other internet users to 'nek', or down, a pint of alcoholic beverage, record yourself doing it, and then nominate others to get it do the same. The nominated person then has 24 hours to complete the task. If the nominated friend doesn't answer the challenge, they're ridiculed on social media."

TECH: With new technology popping up all around us, it can be easy to get lost in the virtual world. Keep your family "connected" by establishing tech-free days. Leave computers and smartphones behind (you, too, Mom and Dad!) and spend quality time with your family biking in the park or playing miniature golf. This is a great way to build memories with the people closest to you.

DRUG: Regularly drug testing your older children can be an important step in keeping them away from drugs. Random tests can give your kids an "out" or an excuse when being peer pressured by friends to try drugs or alcohol. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that your children will make smart decisions.
Empower: I AM NOT ALONE
Self-Harm Awareness Month

Being 13 and just wanting to fit in really takes a toll on a person. I was that age when I first attempted suicide. I replayed every hurtful word that all of those bullies said to me, contemplating why I was their "target."

Bullying is supposed to be the stereotypical boy who takes your lunch money and stuffs you into lockers, right? But that wasn't the case. My "friends" and the people I wanted to fit in with were the bullies.

Now rewind to a few months before my suicide attempt. I wasn't the most physically fit child and people let me know it. Constantly being reminded that you're different, not beautiful, not desirable and not wanted breaks you inside. That began my first form of self-harm: bulimia.

I became very disoriented and disinterested in the things I loved most. It consumed my life, and when it no longer did the trick, I moved into anorexia.
