MASK PRESS RELEASE

From:  Michelle Cardini (michelle@maskmatters.org)

Date: December 10, 2013

Suicide is the Third Leading Cause of Death Among 15-24 Year Olds, Claiming the Lives of 4,600 Young People Annually

(According to the CDC)

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - The word suicide is scary, plain and simple. Parents don't want to think about it, let alone talk about it. But unfortunately, it is all too common. The newest issue of MASK The Magazine, The Hope & Healing Issue: A Look Inside the Chemistry and Causes of Suicide, examines the contributing factors that lead to such a devastating act.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Most youth show clear signs of their intention to attempt suicide, but too often those signs go unnoticed, or loved ones don't know how to respond. According to Lisa Boesky, Ph.D., child/adolescent psychologist and author of "When to Worry: How to Tell if Your Teen Needs Help - and What to Do About It", "You've got to be plugged into your child's life, so that you can see the change in behavior and notice when things are not going well."

Readers of the Winter issue will learn about a nonprofit organization called the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), which was established in 1987 by a group of people who had all lost a loved one to suicide and were concerned with the increasing suicide rates among youths. Through their 50 local chapters in 35 states, the AFSP has raised nearly $20 million for scientific research, and is involved in lobbying efforts to mandate teacher training on youth suicide awareness.

In the magazine's S.A.T. section, Teen Lifeline volunteers share their stories on how they found light at the end of their dark tunnels.

Singer Marie Osmond is featured in MASK's "Moms Making a Difference" section, where she reveals her own painful story of the loss of her son to suicide.

From five ways to handle the loss of a pet, to the age-old question of whether to get the flu shot or not, to MASK's quarterly need-to-know tips on safety, drugs, technology, and bullying, this issue of MASK The Magazine provides tools and resources on how to recognize behaviors that could lead to suicide. The Winter issue is currently available at maskmatters.org and at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, Arizona.

The award-winning MASK The Magazine tackles important subjects including bullying, current drug and alcohol trends, self-esteem, and technology safety. All topics are formatted in easy-to-read, age appropriate sections, from kindergarten to college. Through compelling stories, expert information, and resourceful tips and suggestions, each issue highlights some of the challenges facing children and families today.

MASK The Magazine serves as a reinforcement tool and resource for MASK awareness and prevention presentations. All schools or organizations hosting MASK presentations are offered a MASK The Magazine fundraising opportunity. Each student/member is given one complimentary issue of the magazine, and for every $24 subscription received, the participating school or organization will receive $10. Register your school or organization today by contacting info@maskmatters.org or by calling 480-502-5337.
